Here is a photograph of Private W.A. Dye, a member of Company L 5th Ohio Cavalry Regiment. Dye enlisted on March 22, 1865, and was mustered out with his regiment on October 30, 1865.

Although Dye was a late war recruit, his regiment has an interesting history. When Confederate General James Longstreet was out on his Knoxville expedition, members of the 5th maintained picket duty along the Hiwassee River and maintained communication between Generals Grant and Burnside. During the Atlanta campaign, due to the loss of so many horses, this regiment served as infantry. After the fall of Atlanta, the 5th guarded the railroad from Kingston, GA to Marietta.

On 5 October 1864, a small detachment of this regiment participated in the Battle of Allatoona Pass. As General Sherman moved south, the 5th particpated in activities through GA, and in the Carolinas.
