48MMS Posted September 22, 2010 #1 Posted September 22, 2010 Was curious what era this patch is from. I have had it for many years, but have never found out anything about the era it is from. Thank you in advance.
m1ashooter Posted September 22, 2010 #3 Posted September 22, 2010 I think its earlier. I can't remember wearing one with this design when I was with the 5BMW in the mid 80's. I think its earlier. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wing_000..._(B-36_Era).png
48MMS Posted September 22, 2010 Author #4 Posted September 22, 2010 Thank you for the replies. I had thought B-36 era, but wasn't 100% sure. I also have the triangular one, that I have seen in pics of aircrews with the RB-36, thus the 5th SRW, I think at Travis AFB at the time. Oddly enough I bought it years ago for $4, as it was labeled the "5th OMS".
m1ashooter Posted September 23, 2010 #5 Posted September 23, 2010 Good buy. The 5th has alot of history.
Randy Posted September 23, 2010 #6 Posted September 23, 2010 Al- Main reason for my dates is the white base material it's sewn onto. Your older patches tend to be khaki or colored twill. The 5 BW did in fact use this design until at least the early 80s. A pic of the back always helps when trying to date a patch. The triangle version is the earlier version. Also, I don't trust much off Wikipedia. Not trying to trash anyone's references, but they get a lot wrong there from too many cooks adding to the pot! Randy

Thank you in advance. Al, I got one just like it, picked it up at the BX while pulling Satellite Alert with my 416th Bombardment Wing (Griffiss) B-52G in 1975. Terry L Horstead

It's pre-1966, All Official Letterhead had the round DOD insignia when I entered Basic Training. Terry L Horstead

48MMS Posted September 24, 2010 Author #10 Posted September 24, 2010 As to the 5th SRW/OMS debate. I will look as work permits, but I have seen a pic of aircrew wearing the triangular patch. Could it be a similar instance to the 376th BW/ AEMS? Where the AEMS patch is nothing more than a 376th BW patch with red or yellow AEMS letters stitched above the Wing emblem? And if the 5th SRW is an older OMS patch, does anyone have a scan of the 5th SRW? Thank you, Al
m1ashooter Posted September 24, 2010 #11 Posted September 24, 2010 I think this could be your answer. From the SAC Patch guy. http://www.strategic-air-command.com/patch...ings002-005.htm
kiaiokalewa Posted September 24, 2010 #12 Posted September 24, 2010 Here's one for the 5th Composite Group when it was station of Luke Field in the middle of Pearl Harbor during the 1920's -30's. This felt on felt was made locally by the Chinese tailor shops in and around the Naval base and Hickham. This wasn't used as a pocket or shoulder insignia but as an athletic patch for the boxing, track and field, basketball or swim teams. The organization didn't form a football team like the inland post teams did but in turn the they didn't have swim teams.
