earlymb Posted September 16, 2010 Share #4 Posted September 16, 2010 I too think it is the XB-70 Valkyrie. This is what i found on the 'net: The XB-70 Valkyrie was North American's answer for a high-altitude, supersonic bomber. Two prototypes were created... XB-70A-1 (62-0001) and XB-70A-2 (62-0207). Ship two was destroyed in an unfortunate mid-air collision with NASA F-104N #813 in 1966, killing pilot Dr. Joseph A. Walker in the F-104, and the XB-70A copilot, Maj. Carl Cross. http://www.thenorthspin.com/page_official_usaf_pastjet.html Greetz David
Cobrahistorian Posted September 16, 2010 Share #5 Posted September 16, 2010 The XB-70 is a beautiful design and seeing the survivor up close at the USAFM is just incredible! http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/factsheet...heet.asp?id=
Sabrejet Posted September 16, 2010 Share #6 Posted September 16, 2010 Like the SR-71 Blackbird it was waaay ahead of its time...wouldn't look out of place in a "Star Wars" movie! I believe the protoype met with disaster during the test program when it collided with one of the chase planes. Sabrejet
Cobrahistorian Posted September 16, 2010 Share #7 Posted September 16, 2010 The #2 prototype crashed after the F-104 chase plane got sucked into one of its wingtip vortices. The #1 prototype is on display at the USAF Museum.
