I am not a patch person at all, but I love a good mystery. When I googled "5th Infantry Division Honor Guard", the only thing noteworth was a picture of a 5th ID patch with white border. The caption was something like, "the white border may denote that the patch was worn with the Honor Guard tab".

I served with the 5th ID from 1981-1983 and do not recall seeing this patch.

Since the SSI/tab shown appear to be cut-edge, it is before your time in the division.

The white bordered SSI originated in the days when the 5th was based at Ft Indiantown Gap PA -- 1951-1953.

WHY? Because the 5th CG was tired of his people being mistaken for 28th Inf Div troops, especially at any distance more than 10 feet.

The Honor Guard tab could be from the Indiantown era, or later. The 5th was inactivated in 1953, but reactivated in 1954, in Germany. It inactivated again in 1957, at Ft Ord CA.
