Spike Posted February 5, 2016 Share #59 Posted February 5, 2016 In theory these jackets were a good idea. By the time they were actually produced the 20rd mag pouches were obsolete as SEALs were pretty much using 30rd mags. In actuality they were heavy and hot and that is why you either see them in mint condition or heavily modified. Bladders were removed in a lot of them. Cool coats, kinda like the SS smocks of the VN war. I do have pics of them being worn in VN. And I do have a coat that was worn by a SEAL who was the OIC of a platoon at Solid Anchor. He did a little modification that was pretty cool for 1970. I have pics of SEAL wearing the grenadiers coat as he carried a M-16/XM-148. He had nylon webbing extensions to the mag pockets so they would hold 30rd mags.

taucco Posted February 5, 2016 Share #66 Posted February 5, 2016 That's rad! There was guys from Aussie SF wearing float coats well into the late 80s early 90s That would be an interesting topic. While i found them to be less than comfortable (in my humble thoughts obviously), i was told by more than one person the actually the design was quite practical and appealing to soldiers that the vests were used even later than vietnam war. I've never been able to confirm these words, Anyway, to support this i have a 90's one made from a woodland bdu (not a taiwan knockoff: a jacket shortened, lined with cordura, cordura pouches attached in a similar layout, with a navy modified oral/co2 inflatable bladder inside) as well as this photo taken in 1992 of SDV team 1, with the rightmost guy that looks like he's wearing a rifleman jacket. Spike Posted February 6, 2016 Share #68 Posted February 6, 2016 I know the SEAL on the right, he's a good friend, and I own the float coat he wearing. I've had it for about fifteen years. At some point after the group picture was taken he modified the ammo pockets to accept 30rd mags. Bladder is intact.
