I found this last weekend. I believe it is a civil defense helmet but it is painted yellow. The paint looks original but I am by no means an expert. The date on the helmet is 1943. There is a stamp on it that looks like a D with an arrow. There is a number 475 with letters that look like maybe UT? and HP?

Can someone please help me with this? Is this a civil defense helmet?

Thanks in advance for any help....Kat

Hello :), this is not a civil defense helmet. They are marked US Governemnt on the inside and have totally different lining. With the arrow marking yours is WWII era commonwealth helmet.

Hmmm, looks like a british or canadian 1943 dated Mk II, with possibly a Mk III chinstrap. A very nice one to. Looks like it is painted white underneath the yellow paint. Makes me think, that it might be a reissued for some purpose, canadian wardens helmet, but knowing me, I am probably wrong. Are there any markings in the liner supports? As for the colour, I can only speak of the Mk II's used by the norwegian civil defence. These helmets had the same yellow colour, with a civil defence badge on the front. The only difference is that the norwegain helmets are painted yellow on the outside and the inside. Interestingly yours have the original military paint on the inside, which make me think that it was used by another country. A very nice helmet. I like it.

For reference, I will include a picture of my norwegian civil defence Mk II. I hope it's ok. It's a mild steel helmet, indicated by the three drilled holes, located at the chinstrap attachment points.

All the best

Stig Erik

Hi Kat, without actually seeing the stamps it's hard to say, but what you see as a D with an arrow is likely a C with the arrow inside it, and this is the marking for Canadian Army equipment during WWII. The colour in the photo is hard to define but it may be a desert tan/yellow paint job for the North Africa campaign...? But I agree with the others, this is a British or Canadian helmet and possibly painted or re-issued for some other purpose perhaps during wartime.

Thanks everyone for the help! Since it has the Roman Numeral II in it, I did not realize it was a MKII helmet. Since it was dated 1943 and shaped like a WWI helmet, I just assumed it was a civil defense helmet. :pinch: Live and learn. I still like it anyway.

Thanks again.....Kat
