Great grouping! The JCCS-1 SSI is awesome.

Nice DCU's. I was wondering what the shield emblem was that the crow is holding on these two patches I have. I figured it was a unit patch of some sort. Now I know. Thanks!

US Navy Corpsman jumper with USMC insignia

USMC Alpha blouse with USN Corpsman

I've seen US Navy Corpsman wearing Marine Corps Alpa blouses with his Navy rate sewn to the sleeve. What I didn't know was when was it ok for Corpsman to wear USMC insignia on their USN dress jumper. Which one was worn and when.

I'm sure there is a simple answer I just don't know what it is.

Thanks guys!

It's really just a question of availability. Typically corpsmen assigned to USMC units would wear Marine uniforms, including workwear and the forest green coats, but while the Marines in WWII had the option of wearing dress blues, they weren't required (with some exceptions) to own a set. The corpsmen, on the other hand, already had a few sets of blue jumpers in their seabag, as it was prescribed for wear much more often in Navy units (e.g. dress blues for going on liberty, wearing at weddings, etc), and I believe it was up to the discretion of the CO to allow the wear of shoulder patches on jumpers for unit morale. In seabag sets, you'll often only see one or two with a patch, and the rest bare-shouldered as that was still the regulation way for wear. Here's a photo of John Bradley on his War Bond tour with a large 5th MarDiv patch:

Just to note, that double-patched jumper shown in your post is the exception to the rule. It's the first I've seen, and the oddity of it definitely drove up the price.

jguy1986,

Thank you for the explanation, just as simple as that.

I have a jumper and the greens to a 3rd Div COrpsman. On one uniform the 3rd patch is sewn on upside down Have seen it before.

A cpuple other patched greens have multible names in them. Never research them out.

also have green enlisted blouse with officers rank. The owner was a Naval Doctor assigned to the Marines. This came right out of his estate along with his other uniforms. I was told this was his first USMC unform when he was assigned to the Marines.

I think this is simply a case of Navy Corpsmen being proud to have served with their Marine warriors serving "in the thick of it" during the war.  Either way, awesome items and would love to have a set of Navy blues patched up with Marine Div patches on it.

These are two that I have on display. I also have the 4th MarDiv corpsman’s seabag grouping, and none of his jumpers has a shoulder patch, including his dress blues with the ruptured duck, which I assume was the uniform he wore home. Definitely more (relatively) common to see patches on the forest greens than on jumpers.

I have had several over the years that could be documented from the names and the insignia. The USN MDs attached to the USMC could also wear USMC officer greens and tans but never heard them wearing USMC blues and whites with USMC SSIs. Very rare and desirable IMHO.
