Don't be too ashamed about drinking Pepsi,it was around then and about as popular.Though the father of it all was Dr. Pepper, the first commercially bottled soda! Before then it was all mixed by the apothocary or the jerk.

My father's battalion was reassigned to a shi**y area of Louisianna because of Coke! It's true...

Well, in reality, the story as he relates is that his unit, the 762nd AAA Gun Battalion arrived from Panama in October of 1944 through the LA Port of Embarkation along with the 891st AAA Gun Battalion. Both units were drafted Puerto Rican enlisted, mostly Continental officers. He stated they were assigned a nice area in the camp, near the PX. There was a cooler with free Coke, and soldiers were expected to grab one per. However, Puerto Ricans grabbed six or seven per at a time. So as a result of that, they were relocated to a shabby, muddy spot at the camp boondocks. What do I know, his story, I was not around to witness it. :D

Actually, I know the reason, if true, was because the battalion members abused the privilege, and not because of the Coke. However I wrote it that way to grab attention...

I have a coke bottle that I found while going through the ruins of the old YMCA building on Corregidor Island. The date on the bottle is Dec. 25, 1923.

I found a Coke bottle at Fort Leonard Wood, MO that was labeled as bottled at Lebanon, MO, 30 minutes west of FLW. I assume it is a WWII bottle but I don't know. It looks like the ones posted earlier in the thread.

Corporate Coke has never missed a trick. In WWII, when the allotment of sugar for soft drink makers was HALVED, Coke copped a plea. In exchange for more sugar (more than, say, Pepsi could have), Coke would provide lots of Coke (including FREE) to Stateside camps and USOs, AND -- AND -- set up bottling plants overseas to satisfy soldier-demand. Summary: MARKETING INROADS. Come 1945, there were nice new Coke plants in Hawaii, Australia, Algeria, Egypt, Italy, France, UK, Belgium, Germany, etc.
