SARGE Posted August 1, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 1, 2007 Gents, The Sons of Veterans of the Civil War was an auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic. The SV not only assisted aging GAR veterans but also maintained an armed Militia that was a part of the Army Reserve in the same manner as other US militia units. Here is a period photo of two members of the SV Militia. You will notice that both are wearing the SV medal on their uniforms. This armed militia unit wore standard military equipments with SV insignia. This is a black web Mills belt for the 45-70 with a SV belt buckle. Closeup view of the belt buckle showing the SV embossing instead of the standard US in the center.
