A Specialist 5 being promoted to Staff Sergeant. This particular soldier was a 71H3O Personnel Specialist who served between 1966 and 1971. He is wearing Air Defense Artillery branch insignia. The officer promoting him is from the Air Force.

Good eye, didn't notice that.

Revisiting this photo Kurt A noticing the chinstrap, after study, this chinstrap s not even your standard officers service cap chinstrap, which is what, what s this called, flat bullion???, this one he's wearing is a metal one with vertical segmented whatever you want to call it, doesn't appear to be slide keepers either. Wonder what it is he's wearing, a chinstrap form a civilian Marching Band Shako??? And why is wearing it?

Specialist 7 aka Master Specialist in 1957.  Worn by Maurice L. Richardson of the 380th MP Detachment (Crime Lab).  Most of the 380th's men were Tucson PD officers in civilian life.

.....just another small tidbit to add to this conversation. In my time with the 2/11 ACR. I remember one of the tankers arrived as an E4 hard stripe Corporal. While there after passing the promotion board. He was promoted to the E5 rank of Specialist 5.

Yes it would seem by the late 60s Hard Stripe Corporals made a come back in Combat Arms units other then Artillery and Infantry Pathfinders. We had them when I was in in the early 80s in Hood and Alaska, 11Bs all of them.

Check out this topic for those late 60s ones.

......my last rank, 84 Jan. I had passed the board and was an E4(P). The Dept of the Army froze all promotions within days afterward. Wore this rank home.

Don’t think any have really been reproduced.   Those in the photos look original 50’s 60’s era.   I have never seen an E9 but I think someone posted an E8 being worn.
