I wonder what hit it? It was enough to take the turret off the ring but not enough to knock it clear off.

Hard telling what hit it. I noticed that it's missing both the drive sprocket and idler wheel. Both are high-wear items, and I'd bet that they were cannabalized. It looks like the tracks are trailing off behind. I think it was cleared of the road by a VTR or dozer.

Hi Dwight,

I was thinking the same thing. I've got several photos of knocked out Shermans that were stripped of parts. That would also explain why the tracks were taken apart evenly. It's possible the turret was set back on the hull by the mechanics.

Jim... I concur with you on the picture of the flipped Sherman. That was a great find!! There are probably more pictures of it out there somewhere? Thanks!!!

Man, I like this topic! thumbsup.gif

Great photos, thanks all for sharing them.

We should start a similar topic on the M-18 Tank Destroyer?

Here is a Sherman, in this case owned by the US Marines, located at Cape Gloucester in the PTO. Looks to be having a little barrel maintenance underway.

These two pictures come from a color movie (by George Stevens if I remember correctly) hence the lesser quality.

But I thought they are interesting.
