Hello, I figure some of my fellow navy enthusiasts might enjoy this item. It is an ashtray that was handed out to VIP's and shipyard workers as a souvenir for the commissioning in 1938 of the USS Enterprise, the most decorated ship in WW2.

very cool. Surprised at how large that ashtray is also.

Hello and thanks for the comments everyone. The USS Enterprise is the oldest figural one I've seen. But they made these for other carriers also. The most recent one I've seen was from the 60's, and I believe from the USS Ranger CVA-61. The attached photo shows one from the commissioning of the USS Valley Forge and from the recommissioning of the USS Yorktown as a CVA. The Yorktown is the smaller one. I've seen ones from carriers built by Newport News, Bethlehem Steel Quincy, Mass, and from New York Naval Shipyard.

Very cool, here is the Coral Sea ashtray from the other thread. Also this one is not marked by a shipyard like the Enterprise ashtray. I wonder how common these were?

Hello Chris, I see them come up from time to time. I think the rarer ones are the ones with the shipyard info, these I think were handed out to VIP's, the ones with just the ships name, I think were made by shipyard workers for themselves. I have seen a Coral Sea marked with the shipyard info. Have also seen ones marked for Bethleham Steel, Quincy, and New York Naval Shipyard. So far I have yet to see any marked for Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Also, I have seen these made as recently as for the USS Ranger CVA-61 which would be from the late 50's. PM me if you want with what it cost you, and I'll let you know if you got a good deal.

Regards, Mike

Hello fellows!!!

After digging deep into the internets dark corners, I have come across this posting and wanted to share what I have found and get everyone’s thoughts and knowledge and insights into it.

I believe this to be the Commissioning Ashtray to the USS Yorktown CV-5 (1936) after examining the island design when comparing pics to the USS Yorktown CV-10.

If that’s the case I’m assuming this to be one of the oldest ones I can find of these types of ashtrays as the oldest one I can find is of the USS Enterprise CV-6 that’s on this post.

it does not have the shipyard stamp on it, so I’m not sure if they started initially or with the Enterprise and onward.

Let me know what you guys think :)

Great looking ashtray. I believe your ashtray is depicting the original Yorktown. Who knows when it was made. It looks similar to one I used to own. Here are some pics and obviously this one was made after the sinking.

crazy - have not seen one for commemorative purposes after a ship had sunk.  Could if possibly been an original and they updated it with the dates?

Very Nice !!!  Where did you find them all?  What are your thoughts on their values??? I saw a similar original Yorktown one that was not in as good shape as mine sell on EBay this past May for about $1400.00. Another question is, why are the edges of your Yorktown CV-5 appear to be bent down?  Thanks again for sharing !!

Value is all over the board. Collectors will pay premium, but these can still be found for $10 at yard sales and flea markets.

I believe this ashtray was originally made with the dates on the side. I don’t believe the dates were added later.

The deck is in fact bent down. I assume it was made that way to represent the actual round-down of the flight deck.

Salvage Sailor

Correct, The YORKTOWN had a bullnosed flight deck fore and aft

I’m assuming the $10 amount would be from a seller they do not entirely know what they have. Where were you able to obtain all of yours in your collection ?

I have collected these for over 25 years. Whenever I come across one in my travels I will buy it. I have found them in antique stores, flea markets, yard sales, online and etc. etc.
