hhbooker2 Posted February 27, 2014 Share #303 Posted February 27, 2014 They were for a specialist grade in the 1930s that were in six grades, the highest was Grade 1 Specialist the a chevron and below it six rockers, therefore that one was a Specialist Grade 3! They were sold at the P.X. and some company commanders allowed them to be worn, they were replaced in 1942 with Technican Grades 3, 4 and 5 on Staff Sergeant chevrons with a letter T for Grade 3, Sergeant (Grade 4) and Corporal (Grade 5). Wharfmaster Posted February 27, 2014 Share #304 Posted February 27, 2014 I picked up this Dang near NOS frock overcoat years ago off of the bay for next to nothing. This was before Navy things went through the roof in price. It is named to: G A(?) Hewlett; Aug 31, 1921. There is a LCDR George W. Hewlett listed in the I March 1919 Navy Directory, serving aboard the USS Baltimore. Probably your man. W

lax_master22 Posted March 22, 2014 Share #306 Posted March 22, 2014 Theses are my favourite uniforms in the collection, both belong to Rear Admiral William Max Harnish. Both tunics and caps are named to him, he was a three war veteran serving in WW2 on board the USS North Carolina, Korea in attack squadron seventy five and Vietnam as commanding officer of the USS Ranger, he assumed command of the Ranger in July 1966. He graduated from the Naval Academy with the class of 1943 and later returned to Annapolis to attend a course in Aeronautical Engineering at the Naval Postgraduate School. He received a Bachelor of Science and later attened a course at MIT receiving a Masters of Science in Aeronautical Engineering in 1951. He attained the rank of Rear Admiral on August 1, 1968 and in August of the following year he assumed command of Carrier Division Six in the Atlantic Fleet. By September of 1970 he reported for duty as Deputy Comptroller of the Navy with his last post being Commander of the Pacific Missile Range, Point Mugu, California. I recently managed to get in touch with one of his daughters who hadn't seen either of these uniforms in such a long time, she assumes that her mother sold the uniforms before she passed in 2010. She was kind enough to send me a photo of a painting commissioned for her father when he was the executive officer of the USS Enterprise from 1961-1964. . . carbinephalen Posted March 23, 2014 Share #307 Posted March 23, 2014 Stunning uniforms! What planes did he fly and when?
lax_master22 Posted March 23, 2014 Share #308 Posted March 23, 2014 He was only an active pilot for a very brief time, he only flew aircraft during the Korean war and from 1955-1957. I do know that in 1955 he commanded fighter squadron 21 in both the atlantic and pacific fleets which were operating the FJ-3 Fury. As for the Korean war I don't have a clue I would assume that he was probably flying A-1 Skyraiders.

lax_master22 Posted March 23, 2014 Share #310 Posted March 23, 2014 He was a gunnery officer on the Carloina. I probably should have said that he was on the Carolina until July 1944 after which he was sent to flight training and received his wings in August 1945

He was an *#%kicker for sure! Carbinephalen, thanks for asking. Here is a better view of his rack. Yes, all of his citations can be read along with a short bio on page 6 of my collection thread. Lots of other terrific uniforms posted there as well! http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/183016-the-james-paris-collection/page-

SaigonSVFan95 Posted May 19, 2014 Share #316 Posted May 19, 2014 No real story behind this one. This had been sitting in my local Army Navy store for a while, and it caught my eye, specifically for the South Vietnamese jump badge.. Alas, I didn't have the funds available to buy it until now. For a mere $30, I'm a happy man. Been part of my daily wear ever since (Along with my normal clothing. Pants, t-shirt, etc). The shirt itself is 1968 dated. Name tape has been removed, so I have no idea who exactly was the owner of this before it came into my hands. I apologize for the somewhat suckish photos. Taken from my phone. Looking forward to seeing what y'all have! This is probably one of my new favourite uniforms, picked it up June. Belongs to Peter Paul Martinek who earned the Navy Cross aboard the USS Marblehead in early 1942. manayunkman Posted September 28, 2014 Share #325 Posted September 28, 2014 This uniform is to a fella that served in the OSS in Greese, I was hoping that someone might be able to ID the patch on the right breast pocket. I believe it might be Greek of some sort. The picture in the lower right corner is of the man in this uniform. This is my first attempt at posting with a picture, I hope it comes out OK. Jon attachment Did you ever find out about this patch and if you still have it can you show the OSS patch on the other sleeve ? I love OSS stuff.
