Hi all,

I just bought this incomplete M38 helmet. As you can see on the picture, there are two little holes in the front of the "shell".

Have you got any idea of the use of those holes ? To fix rank or unit insignias ?

Regards,

B.

Theres nothing like that on the 2 I have. I also don't see, what I only know as,the retaining arms

that pivot back and forth on the sides. If thats the case you can add 2 more holes. Go to this site:

www.752ndtank.com/tankhelmet.html

From this you'll get all kinds of very good helmet info.

Thanks for your answer.

As I said, this helmet is incomplete (no retaining arms and no back strap) but I'll restore it.

I just want to know if somebody has already seen holes like that on the front of a M38' shell. And if yes, what were they used for ?

Regards,

I would guess to fix a lt bar, holes like these were also drilled in m1 helmets for the same reason. US tanker helmets were also used by other countries after the war, so it could have something to do with that.

Do you have a photo of the sides?

Thanks.

I have a tanker helmet without the retaining arms & I think it was manufactured that way. It also had been painted bright green. I suspect some of these may have been manufactured postwar for football or other civilian use. Does your helmet look like the arms cam off or like they were never attached?
