Col. Jimmie Leach, commander of the 11th Armored Cavalry in Vietnam from April–December 1969. Note he is also wearing the pocket patch of the 5th ARVN Division which was aligned with the 11th ACR.

General Headquarters Reserve SSI worn by an Armored Infantry officer

AGF Replacement Depot.Armored Infantry.1.jpg

That Branch of Service insignia is Tank Infantry. While obsolete, it was worn by some armor soldiers until It was replaced by the Armored Force insignia in 1941. Until the Armored Force was created, there was no separate armor branch and tanks were part of the infantry branch. The soldiers of WW2 armored infantry battalions were to wear infantry Branch of Service insignia.

I found this one on the U.S. Army Pacific Facebook page and almost overlooked it. The soldier is wearing a 25th Infantry Division SSI with a "HELIBORNE" tab.

8th Military Police Brigade with ARCTIC tab. This picture was posted in 2023 on the U.S. Army Pacific's Facebook page.

The ARCTIC tab was originally created as an individual skill tab earned by those who graduated from the Cold Weather Orientation Course or Cold Weather Leadership Course held at the Northern Warfare Training Center and was authorized for wear on the Army Combat Uniform and Army Service Uniform by U.S. Army Pacific while assigned to any of its units while in its area of responsibility.

On 25 April 2022, the G-1 of the U.S. Army authorized the wear of the ARCTIC tab by soldiers assigned to organizations in Alaska as a temporary wear tab with specific SSIs, above any already designed unit tabs and below individual tabs.

As the 8th MP Brigade is located in Hawaii, it would seem this soldier would have earned the ARCTIC tab as an individual award prior to 2022 and is still wearing it as such even after it was revamped to to indicate an organizational identification.

196th Infantry Brigade with ARCTIC tab. Probably the same explanation described in previous post.

It's interesting that the same tab can be both an individual skill award and unit designator, depending on the circumstances.

George Pullen, U.S. Army combat journalist, with the 25th Infantry Division - September 1967. Note the U.S. Army tape. "Bao Chi" is Vietnamese for media or press.

Instructor at the Basic Airborne Course at Fort Benning, Georgia wearing the Infantry School SSI with AIRBORNE tab as well as the oval for the 1st Battalion 507th Infantry on her black cap. But notice she is also wearing a full color metal Infantry School device on her pocket hanger. What was the purpose of wearing both the SSI and pocket hanger at the same time?

"MARCH 12, 1945: Maj. Gen. Robert S. Beightler, 37th Infantry Division, receives a loving cup from Mr. Earl Carroll, a former prisoner of the Japanese military at Santo Tomas University. The cups were presented on behalf of the internees to the units that liberated the prisoners during the Battle of Manila the previous month. To the left of Maj. Gen. Beightler are representatives of the 1st Cavalry Division and 44th Tank Battalion."

Recent graduates of the Ranger Course at Fort Moore, Georgia from this summer sporting a variety of full color SSI. In the first photo we see the 25th Infantry Division, 18th Field Artillery Brigade, 173rd Airborne Brigade, 10th Mountain Division and 2nd Infantry Division. In the second phot, we see the JFK Special Warfare Center, 4th Infantry Division and Armored Division in the background, and a couple of Ranger battalion scrolls.
