Col. Charles H. Reed commanded the 2nd Cavalry Group in the European Theater during World War II. Here we see him wearing the SSI of the Group while receiving an award from a French general. The second photo shows him wearing the 2nd Cav SSI as a combat patch followed by a picture of what I believe is the same uniform. The 2nd Cav patch appears to be bullion and is virtually the same SSI that was later approved in the 60's for the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment.

The 299th Infantry was a Regimental Combat Team back then, so once again we see no RCT patch worn when this RCT had one for it. The other Hawaiian Regiment was also a RCT, no real info on that one.

HQ & HQ Detachment Hawaii Army National Guard

Worn from:  17 June 1948 - Current.  The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved for Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, Hawaii National Guard on 14 March 1949.  Kamehameha I, in red feathered helmet, was the first ruler of a united Hawaii after conquering most of the Hawaiian Islands by 1810.

Here's an identified helmet liner with decal and web gear from from my collection which belonged to an officer attached to the HANG HQ.
