The unit was converted to the 1st Armored Regiment and assigned to the 1st Armored Division during World War II and upon the division's reorganization in 1944, became the 1st Tank Battalion. The caption reads that these soldiers were liberated prisoners of war of the Germans who were returned to the U.S. in March 1945 on the Swedish ocean liner Gripsholm.
