Two pictures of Matthew Ridgway as a major general in command of the 82nd Infantry Division or perhaps early in his command of the 82nd Airborne Division, most likely sometime between June and August 1942. At any rate, the AIRBORNE tab is not yet being worn. Note the men in the khaki uniforms with Gen. Ridgway are wearing black ties and 82nd SSI on their chests along with some kind of patch on their caps. I'm guessing they are World War I veterans of the division visiting the division at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana.

Specialist 4 of the 1st Cavalry Division wearing an SSI with reversed colors in Vietnam. We can assume this was tolerated by the higher ups since he is standing in front of the division commanding general.

The same officer from the previous picture. The leaflet mission was flown in conjunction with combat operations by the 173rd Airborne Brigade in September 1965.

A photo of a 25th Inf Div Pfc with a full color rank and subdued shoulder patch on a  Fatigue Shirt, patch maybe is U.S. made or South Vietnamese made, this is sometime in late 1966. Note how he is uncharacteristically armed with the very new XM177E1 sub machine gun, a weapon normally carried by officers.

Found this late-sh 50s early-sh 60s photo of a private purchase Tanker Type Jacket being worn with one of the 504th Airborne Novelty Devils patch on it along with an oversized 504th Airborne Unit crest patch. The 504th Devils patch of this particular style is evidently so rare I couldn't fine a original example to post, just either repros or graphics of it, not even a Forum search turned up one of these, just one topic on the WWII type.

The man wearing it is Oliver A. Ware, Ware came into the Army around 1957, Ware, I regret to report, was as a Sfc, KIA in Vietnam May 1967 with the 2nd Battalion 502nd infantry, 1st Brigade 101st Airborne Division.

Here's an example of the style of 504th, but not an example. Have never seen the oversized one.  They exist in twill and fully embr, from blank (as depicted), and H & H to HM.

Here is an interesting post WW2 photo (really wrinkled) I found this weekend. Lots going on, so let's get started.

Staring from the right,

* An African American Mater Sgt wearing Army chevrons and Far East AF patch

* The CPT speaking to him, wearing standard AF patch on the right shoulder

* New AF Master Sgt stripes watching this conversation and wearing US open collar brass.

* Mix of officers wearing wings, summer khaki hats and uniforms.

* Mix of officers wearing chocolate hats and and ike jacket.

* the man leaning over in the center of the photo has a patch on the right shoulder, but to fuzzy to make out.

If you pick out something I miss, post your observation.

An officer of XXII Corps Post War Occupation, given the amount of Overseas Bars on the OD Shirt, he may have either been in an earlier unit and transferred into the XXII Corps post V-E Day, or his whole unit was transferred over.

A subdued 1st Armored Division SSI worn by PFC Bruce Wesley Dudley, Jr. who was assigned to the 1st Squadron 1st Cavalry which was attached to the Americal Division in Vietnam. He is receiving his first Purple Heart. He earned his second Purple Heart when he was killed in action on January 23, 1968.

Here's a confusing one. The soldier is assigned to the 194th Armored Brigade and is wearing the DUI of the 1st Cavalry Regiment. He appears to be wearing an Infantry blue shoulder cord and backing discs, but not he is wearing enlisted Ordnance Corps branch insignia on his collars and officer Cavalry branch insignia on his Stetson hat. He served 1969 to 1977 and had an 11B MOS, so this is definitely one of those crazy mid-70's uniform/insignia combinations.

Shoulder Cord.Ordnance.2.jpg

This guy is a fraud.  I think some folks feel the "bomb" insignia of the Ordnance Corps is an old  insignia of the infantry.  In Europe the bursting grenade represents the Infantry.  Also, his Purple Heart and ARCOM ribbons are upside down.  Look at his unit awards.  He has a Navy/USMC Presidential Unit Award first.  The blue ribbon is the Army version which should have come first.  He is also wearing the Korean and Philippine Presidential Unit Citations and he never served in WW2 or Korea.  Also, I question the Stetson hat.  I actually don't think that is the right type.

I would think this photo was taken stateside after he was in Vietnam after awhile rather then at Hood in 67, on a leave perhaps?, cause he's already wearing the CIB and a PH ribbon. According to his profile on The Wall he gets to Vietnam with the unit in December 1967, so he may had to be wounded bteween then and when he died in April 68 and perhaps had a leave? Emergency Leave?

I would assume he served a prior tour in Vietnam then went back a second time with the 11th.

Yes, that could be it as well. these two of him, on the Together We Served (I guess this is were you found the initial photo, but while it doesn't list all his units in the 10 years he was in, it does for Nam, and only the Americal, not earlier ones say like the 1st Div, 25th Div 173rd Abn Bde etc), One definitely at Hood, no Combat patch or CIB, just the parachute badge, basic, cloth, full color, and this one in the same uniform in the top, while most of the shoulder is cropped we don't really see an indication of a Combat patch, if there was we might see juuust a smidgen of it.
