Salvage Sailor Posted April 15, 2020 Share #4476 Posted April 15, 2020 33rd Infantry Division (Golden Cross), Summer 1943 - Newly arrived from California, on Oahu for Jungle Training prior to the invasion of New Guinea (Morotai) "The Bearcats" - The 2nd Battalion, 136th Infantry traces it lineage back to the 2nd Regiment, Minnesota Volunteer Infantry The 136th Infantry was again activated in April of 1942 for World War II and assigned to the 33rd Division. After a stay in New Guinea, they moved to the island of Morotai where for 20 days they fought virtually alone against fanatical Japanese resistance. The next fight for the 136th Infantry was Luzon, in the Phillippines. The 136th Infantry overcame resistance at such places as Kennon Road and Skyline Ridge to help secure the island. seanmc1114 Posted April 21, 2020 Share #4478 Posted April 21, 2020 Here's an interesting photo for a number of reasons. The information I have says this was taken in 1946. Note the soldier on the right is wearing what looks like some sort of theater made 1st Infantry Division SSI. Yet, unless I am mistaken, he is wearing the DUI of the 122nd Field Artillery Battalion which was assigned to the 33rd Infantry Division and served in the Pacific. The soldier is definitely wearing the ribbon for the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the other ribbon is either for the Army Good Conduct Medal or the World War II Victory Medal. Note he is not wearing any enlisted branch insignia but instead officer's U.S. collar insignia. And at some point he was an infantryman since he has a Combat Infantryman Badge. Any ideas? Have I misidentified the DUI?
patches Posted May 6, 2020 Share #4479 Posted May 6, 2020 And one more of the White Bordered Red Diamond patch, here on the OD Poplin Overcoats. Like the OD Wool Overcoat it replaced, full insignia was worn on it, worn on it till 1967 when it was replaced by the new Sage Green Overcoat and Sage Green Raincoat, where insignia was not worn, save for officers rank on the shoulder loops, EMs worn none, that's until the early-sh 70s when those White Plastic Backings came out to be worn with the Subdued EM Rank pins, and ultimately the Gold Colored EM Rank Pins. Also unlike the previous postings where a Non White Borered 5th Div stencil or decal is sen on the front of the liners, these guys have a White Bordered Decal, a decal probably, on the sides of the liner, and have some kind of device in the center, maybe unit number,, can't tell. That seems to have been typical for the 69th at that time. Most pictures and uniforms I've seen have a regimental pocket patch. CSM Shaumeyer served in the 970th Engineer Maintenance Company in Europe, from what I can tell, with campaign credit for Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Germany in Central Europe. His unit was also credited with Ardennes-Alsace.
