seanmc1114 Posted February 11, 2016 Share #2052 Posted February 11, 2016 Next shows several units. The soldier on the right end is wearing an unnumbered Armored triangle representing the 190th Tank Battalion. Two men down is a soldier wearing the 122nd Infantry with another to his right wearing the 121st Infantry.
seanmc1114 Posted February 11, 2016 Share #2053 Posted February 11, 2016 Here is a better shot of the 121st Infantry - "The Old Grey Bonnet" regiment. My grandfather served with this unti in the 50's and probably would have had a liner just like this one.
seanmc1114 Posted February 11, 2016 Share #2054 Posted February 11, 2016 Here is an MP of the 48th Armored Division in 1955. His liner is probably MP green with white or yellow letters and band. Notice it is definitely a lighter shade than the soldier to his right.

seanmc1114 Posted February 11, 2016 Share #2059 Posted February 11, 2016 How did this turn into a helmet decal thread? They all show the wearing of the rarely seen 48th Infantry Division SSI, either on the uniform or on the helmet.
patches Posted February 12, 2016 Share #2060 Posted February 12, 2016 They all show the wearing of the rarely seen 48th Infantry Division SSI, either on the uniform or on the helmet. That's right Sean, plus it's always important to ID the sub unit in question, the DI decals can show it.
patches Posted February 13, 2016 Share #2061 Posted February 13, 2016 Found three Thunderbird patches in Korea 52-53. The officer is BG Ginder, interestingly he got a bad rap early in the Normandy Campaign, inexplicable to me, given his record during the war and later in Korea, but then I see DePuy was involved and didn't like him. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_De_Witt_Ginder

lamarhooten Posted February 13, 2016 Share #2063 Posted February 13, 2016 They all show the wearing of the rarely seen 48th Infantry Division SSI, either on the uniform or on the helmet. Gotta second this! Rarely seen 48th Inf. Div. SSi being worn on anything! I have had very heated discussions as to whether or not this patch was really worn. Here is good proof and I will use copies of these photos to prove it.

I have had very heated discussions as to whether or not this patch was really worn. Here is good proof and I will use copies of these photos to prove it. That reminds me. I got an issue of a National Guardsman magazine with a photo of a GI with the 48th Div patch on while holding the new 48th Armored Div next to it on the shoulder, OR something along those lines, must look and scan. patches Posted February 13, 2016 Share #2065 Posted February 13, 2016 AH HA found it, not exactly as I said, but I did say SOMETHING ALONG THOSE LINES , haven't looked at this in a few years. Anyway here we are caption and all, it's from the March 1956 issue of The National Guardsman, so photo must of been taken a few months earlier, 48th Inf Div reorganized and redesignated as 48th Armd Div November 1955. patches Posted February 19, 2016 Share #2073 Posted February 19, 2016 The oldest Draftee in today's Army (Drafted April 1972, he retired finally December 31, 2011) Jeffrey J. Mellinger, when he was a E-6 and DS at the Fort Gordon Signal Corps AIT 1st Signal Training Brigade circa very early 80s, note the actual Canadian Army issue cloth Jump Wings are worn rather than the more common U.S. made subdued with the Red Maple Leaf. I believe at this time Gordon no longer conducted general Basic like it used to, just Branch AIT, if this is incorrect, please correct me, like the good Drill Sergeants did .
