She is in a unit on airborne status. She is also airborne, but that does not neccesarily mean you wear the maroon beret. A soldier has to be in an airborne designated unit, too.

We can be in an Airborne unit & not been jump qualified. I was with XVIIIth Abn Corps & was a leg. I was with them in Iraq so never wore a beret for them. When medevaced I was to wear my most recent SSI prior to being medevaced which actually was odd since everyone at Corps wore USF-I (formerly MNF-I) then went OND ended they had me swap to the actual command of USF-I & directed the organizational beret. Before I got one all broken soldiers were to wear PCs so I still didn't have to. Even the SF guys had to quit wearing their beret which was interesting. Some obliged some did not.

Nice Cold War shot of the Transportation Center & School SSI worn on a fatigue uniform by a Captain at Fort Eustis, VA circa 1965. Notice he is wearing pin-on rank and collar insignia. Also note on his Ridgeway cap he wears jump wings below his rank insignia, the opposite of how I have typically seen it worn.

We've seen the 3rd Armored Division before, but I just love the look of all of the insignia on this khaki uniform. Also note that the bottom of the SSI appears to be coming up.

Need help with this one. Special Operations? Special Forces? Theater command?

Thanks for the info, SFC. I do recall looking at that one on the Institute Of Heraldry website, http://www.tioh.hqda.pentagon.mil/Catalog/Heraldry.aspx?HeraldryId=11275&CategoryId=6641&grp=2&menu=Uniformed%20Services, but interestingly, it does not show a SSI.

Three views of the full color 7th Division combat patch (Korean War) worn by Lt Col Hal Moore at the Battle of LZ X-Ray, he does mention wearing an HBT shirt (M1947) during the operation in the book.

In this we see the tack button stud of the HBT shirt.

A frontal view, it's curious that he removes the Cav patch (note the ghosting, though the ghosting could be the 2nd Div patch he wore prior to sewing on the Cav patch which are nearly the same size, or a combination of both Indianhead and Horse Blacket patches) but kept on his 7th Div combat patch on, one would of thought he would of removed both, anyway good views here.

Two recent photos of full color 3rd Infantry Division patches being worn on filed uniforms. Also notice a couple of the tankers in the second picture are also wearing the 3rd ID SSI as a combat patch.

I believe that full color SSI may be worn on work and combat uniforms while in a garrison situation at a commander's discretion.

That's a fabulous idea, must be extremely popular, kinda like in days of yore when we would wear our Class As or Khakis for paydays.

For us patch collectors, we had better hope that garrison patches become mandatory at home bases.

I was just in one of the military supply stores just outside Fort Benning on Saturday and they still carried a full line of full color, BDU subdued, desert subdued and ACU SSI as well as ranks and skill badges. And the prices were not that bad.
