willysmb44 Posted May 25, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 25, 2010 I’ve heard horror stories on some of the blank-only pistols out of Europe and I’ve always steered clear of them. I’ve bought two different “drop in” blank-adapted barrel kits for my real .45, but they never worked with any dependability (one never cycled at all). I recently ran across a listing for this Umarex 1911A1 and was wondering if anyone has experience with them. I very rarely ever do “blank shooting” things anymore but there might be some cases in the next year or so where something like this would be handy. Opinions from anyone who’s owned or shot one? Greaser Posted May 25, 2010 Share #2 Posted May 25, 2010 Lee- If you still have those "drop in" kits for your 45 - I'd be happy to talk through troubleshooting the issues with them. Hopefully that can get you going with spending little to nothing, versus hundreds on a "blank only" piece. Shoot me a PM and we can go from there if you'd like. Chris- Long ago got rid of both of the, NOBODY was able to make them work, and I had two Army armorers and a gunsmith pal of mine, never worked at all... Dirteater101 Posted May 25, 2010 Share #4 Posted May 25, 2010 Those "blank only" barrels are a bit of a bear, if you do not know exactly what you are doing... Think exact opposite of live 1911 barrels. Locking ridges gone, filed and polished as smooth as possible. Where most people fail it the muzzle area. After threading for the allen plug, a lot of metal has to be removed. Down about 2 inches. The tapping procedure "bells" out the end of the barrel. For it to function properly it actually must be smaller than the the original barrel profile. Than polish the living #$%@ out of where you took away metal. You need it as loose and sloppy as possible. Than you have issues with the .45acp pistol blanks, but that is another rant entirely! Most of the bruni and similar blank only "blow back" guns(?) will give you a few seasons of heavy service. Before they shoot themselves apart. For what you use them for, and how often you would fire the darn thing. Just about anyone would work..
THAT GUY Posted May 29, 2010 Share #5 Posted May 29, 2010 I went to a reenactment about 1 year ago where a member of my german group had a p38 blank only pistol. I fired with my right hand and my left eye closed (I know it is fake, its a reflex from firing real weapons). The d***ed thing sent hot powder into my right eye. Of course I did not see the barrel was plugged and didnt know to close both eyes, but those kind of guns just plain out suck. Sam
ColBob506 Posted May 29, 2010 Share #6 Posted May 29, 2010 Maybe I'm just lucky or something! I've hade my Kimar about 3 yrs and have zero complaints.I maintain it like I would a real gun.I'm sure sometime the none steel parts are gonna wear out,but for the 65 bucks I paid for it I figure I've already got my moneys worth! I gotta agree with Dirt though in as much as you might as well spend the least you can cause they all crap out sooner or later. Sparrow

Anything will look good for a longer period of time when it is drawn mainly to open a bottle!
Blake_E Posted June 2, 2010 Share #8 Posted June 2, 2010 Yep, I was going to say myself, one word - Kimar. Great quality, both mine and my cousin's have been going sweetly for a while, I reckon they are fantastic for their price. One of, if not the best blank style 1911 period

Best use for the darn thing.. My original blank pot metal gun still lives on, with only half of its original parts though... as a good (ish) holster filler for the first sgt. Has lived on in pseudo- retirement, think the record is 9 rounds before some sort of failure....
