Owen, It looks to me as if this is actually some sort of painting, NOT a photograph.

And a E Co 1st Bn 60th Infantry, 172nd Inf Bde (Sep) ADA man, who is Jump Qualified, around 1976-77. In the 172nd Inf Bde. in the 60s and 70s Jump Qualified troops of different MOS were found in the Battalion's HHC, like Medics, and in the Battalion's Combat Support Companies, like in the Redeye Platoon, which were the E Companies, and were specifically attached in the field to their respective battalion's Charlie Airborne's. With the reinstatement of the Maroon Beret in the late summer of 1981 in the brigade, the Garrison Cap with Para Gilder patch was out and the Beret was in, these non Infantry Paratroopers in the HHC and E Companies of the three line battalions would wear the Beret too again as they did in the 70s.

Black berets worn by members of the 2nd Squadron 6th Cavalry assigned to post support and testing duties at the Armor School at Fort Knox between 1974 and 1986. Note they are wearing Cavalry branch insignia.

I finally found a blue 101st Airborne beret. This one is from the 1st bde. I got this one from the granddaughter who said he did three tours in Vietnam from 68-72.

A well worn 3rd Special Forces Group green beret that I picked up in a large grouping last weekend. Definitely a GWOT time period beret.

A MAAG Officer or a Noncom in South Vietnam 1963, wearing a Black Beret with his Master Parachute Badge on it, not sure on the color in this B/W photo, he's wearing it in the manner I like to call the Pierre Manner, like a Frenchman in France :D Note his ARVN Counterpart is wearing his in a more Military Manner.

Reserve Special Forces Troops at a Drill at Ft Meade Maryland, 1965, probably of the old 11th Special Forces Group, that Staff Sergeant, he may not be Flashed, as one more of them are only wearing the DI only one we see with a Candy Stripe.

Here's another photo showing the red or maroon beret with Medical Department Center & School DUI with maroon bib and shoulder cord worn on the left shoulder. Note his Medical Corps branch insignia is worn improperly on the right collar. He may also be wearing maroon discs behind his collar insignia.

These were talked about here FF, Maroon Berets worn in a SF Unit.

Yep, simple answer, not Q Course qualified. Like the song says, "100 men will test today, but only 3 three win the green beret." OR something like that.

The soldier is not Special Forces qualified. He is assigned to 1st SFGA in some type support role. He is airborne qualified, you can see the wings, and wears the maroon beret with 1st group flash. SKIP

Judging from this one photo where we see a Maroon Beret wearing SF Man SKIPH, would it be safe to assume that all these Non SF Qualified but Jump Qualified personnel like him assigned to a SFG will not be of an 11 Series Infantry MOS and would be from one of the Support Branches?, even though as we know he would not be wearing the Blue Stuff even if he was say an 11C.

I did a short time in an SF unit in the 80s as a non qual. I had a green beret and when they gave it to me, they said "its only a hat and now you are in uniform..." The difference then was the SF tab. Now, with that said, I was only there because an in service recruiter screwed up and had me assigned there when I left active duty, I was air assault qualified but not airborne. I was there 4 months and got orders for an infantry unit. Perhaps things have changed since then, or perhaps they just did it because it was the reserve? Scott

There are no 11 series assigned to SF groups, not even in support roles.

All of them have some type of support MOS, from cooks to mechanics and everything in between
