firefighter Posted April 11, 2018 Share #426 Posted April 11, 2018 I would bet Command Sergeant Major. It looks like his top ribbon is for the Army Distinguished Service Medal which is rare even for a CSM, much less a First Sergeant. On the other hand, it could be the Soldier's Medal. I think it is a Silver Star
BEAST Posted May 26, 2018 Author Share #427 Posted May 26, 2018 I was happy to find an example at the local flea market. This blue beret has the flash and DUI for the 1st Bn, 327th Infantry, 101st Abn Division. It was stored improperly giving it the appearance of a USN flat hat. When I display it, it will be reblocked so it will lay correctly (I'll also put the flash over the eye).

MPage Posted May 31, 2018 Share #429 Posted May 31, 2018 Here's another one of these flashes with swords that were used by reserve units. 1/193rd Cavalry? Can't find anything about them online.

seanmc1114 Posted July 9, 2018 Share #433 Posted July 9, 2018 I'm not sure what color the beret is or what the flash is. This is Major General Michael D. "Iron Mike" Healy, who was a legend among Special Forces, on his retirement in 1981. I believe at the time he commanded Army Readiness Region V, so the flash may be associated with that command, but it is interesting he is wearing both his rank as well as the 1st Special Forces DUI on the flash, suggesting the beret may be green. Any thoughts?
Peter De Waele Posted July 9, 2018 Share #434 Posted July 9, 2018 Could it be the JFKSWCS flash? I'm not sure what color the beret is or what the flash is. This is Major General Michael D. cavcon Posted October 21, 2018 Share #435 Posted October 21, 2018 I was looking trhough some old files today and came across this photo. It is of Lt. Col. James Garvey when he commanded the "5th Squadron - Cavalry" at Ft. knox in the mid 1970's. I am not sure if that is the correct designation of the unit but seems to be the way everyone refers to it. The second photo is of my beret from the 5th Sqd. Note the Armor Center insignia next to the flash on both.
militariaone Posted October 25, 2018 Share #436 Posted October 25, 2018 Greetings all, Thought I'd add 3 images of "Official Guidance" (1973) on the wear of the Black Beret for 2d/11th Cavalry stationed in Germany and one image of a 1976 Army Time's Article with a nice picture of the Beret in wear. patches Posted October 26, 2018 Share #440 Posted October 26, 2018 Sporting the Dark Blue Beret The then Colonel Fred K. Mahaffey (he would rise to 4 Stars) is seen in the summer of 1975 when he C.O. 2nd Brigade 101st Airborne Division at Ft Campbell Kentucky. Sadly, Mahaffey would die in service of cancer at 52 in late1986.

patches Posted November 13, 2018 Share #443 Posted November 13, 2018 January 1974. Troops of D Troop 5th Cavalry, the Recon unit of the Army Reserves 187th Inf Bde (Sep) wearing Black berets, the flash seems to be a narrow like shield? half Red half White? That of course is John Wayne with them, seen this from 1974 about Wayne being at Harvard for a debate or something. https://www.nytimes.com/1974/01/16/archives/john-wayne-plays-a-new-role-the-invader-of-harvard-square-pushing-a.html

seanmc1114 Posted January 24, 2019 Share #446 Posted January 24, 2019 101st Aviation Battalion around 1974-1975. Note the Specialist 4 is wearing leadership tabs. It looks like he is wearing Branch Unassigned collar insignia.
Manny C Posted January 24, 2019 Share #447 Posted January 24, 2019 Unless my eyes are playing tricks it does look like a Ranger tab there, it's a light color, not dark like a White on Blue Airborne tab. It more noticable in the film capture. post-257-0-45905100-1361177282.jpg It's an early cut edge ranger tab....

It looks like he is wearing Branch Unassigned collar insignia. He esn't an Aircrewman (No Wings), plus those guys I believe wore the Transportation Corps disc, so maybe he's in some kind of slot in the battalion HHC?
