tigerfan Posted April 25, 2010 #1 Posted April 25, 2010 Here is an interesting squadron patch I picked up today for the 20th weather squadron. I believe this is from the 1960's Vietnam era and was told that the original owner was a career man serving with the airforce from 1952 to 1972. However I don't know or understand what the term "The Kaminaries" means. Does anyone know?
Tonomachi Posted April 25, 2010 #2 Posted April 25, 2010 This is a guess but the 20th Weather Squadron was probably operating out of Japan due to what is depicted on this patch. The demon looking character in the middle of this patch is a mythical Japanese figure called Raijin or the God of Thunder. The circular objects around the back are a series of drums and the barbell looking things in the hands are drum sticks. So the striking of the drums produces the thunder. I have attached photos of a statue of Raijin and one on a Samurai sword (katana) hilt. The term Kami in Japanese means God.
Steindaddie Posted April 27, 2010 #4 Posted April 27, 2010 Very nice patch! And yes, the 20th Weather Squadron (deactivated in 2006) spent most of it's time in Japan.
