Josh B. Posted April 15, 2010 Share #1 Posted April 15, 2010 I got this at a yard sale for a pretty reasonable price. It's an early issue piece, with slot brooch backing used to make a crimp brooch. Opinions on engraving? The font and size look good to me, but I've never seen one of these dated. Were ARCOMs sometimes officially engraved with a date? Thanks, Josh

JBFloyd Posted April 15, 2010 Share #3 Posted April 15, 2010 In July 1949, the Army (and Air Force) announced the creation of a metal pendant for the Commendation Ribbon (which had been established in December 1945). So, this is a very early award of the new design of the "Commendation Ribbon with metal pendant". Lavryk doesn't appear in the 1952 Army Register or 1953 Air Force Register, so it's likely he was an NCO.

With this quote in mind, the medal may have been dated to commemorate one of the first presentations. Don't know if such things were done, just a thought. Josh B. Posted April 15, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted April 15, 2010 Thanks for the info guys. The date still kind of makes me wonder. Anyone know of any officially engraved medals that include a date like this?
Josh B. Posted May 5, 2021 Author Share #6 Posted May 5, 2021 Jeff, You were right. After several years I looked him up again and finally got a hit on Fold3. Returning from theater aboard USNS Gen. Mitchell to San Francisco on April 19 1952. I believe he was Air Force. The sailing list originated from Heaquarters 6430D Personnel Processing Squadron APO 959.
