Hello, Hopefully Disney Dave can help me on this. I was just wondering if this is a Disney design, the artist is J. Gonzalez. I have tried to look up info on the artist but could'nt find anything. USS Tripoli CVE-64 was a Casablanca class escort carrier commissioned on Oct, 31, 1943 and was decommissioned in May , 1946. This insignia is from that time frame. Thanks for any info anyone could share.

Composite Squadron (VC-79) 79 had a VERY similar patch, not sure which ship they flew off of but do a comparison. Hope this helps, Mark

Hello Mark, Both VC-64 and VC-79 have similar designs, but I believe only VC-4 and VC-13 were ever deployed on the USS Tripoli. I believe the insignia is for the crest of the USS Tripoli, not one of the deployed squadrons. My main answer I'm looking for is if anyone knows if the design from Disney. If anyone knows for sure if I'm off base I'd appreciate the info. Thanks for the info Mark.

Hello David, Thanks for the reply, In your opinion do you think it could be a Disney design? Have you ever heard of the artist J. Gonzalez doing work for Disney. If you need the image feel free to use it. I am just curious as to the design because it kind of looks like a Disney design. Thanks again.

Try and find a Tripoli Reunion/historical association web page and post send question and photo to them, that would probably be your best shot !

This is what I have in my database for Composite Squadron 79. The Disney version was created by artist Hank Porter. Unfortunately I have not heard of the name you mentioned. The leopard in your design is almost an exact copy. Wonder if your artist saw it somewhere, liked the Disney version, and then decided to create his own.

Hello, Thanks for the info Johnny and Dave. It was the similarity to the VC-79 insignia that had me wondering if this was also a Disney design. I have had no luck researching the artist. The piece itself looks like it was made aboard ship. It is on an aluminum backing with Plexiglas riveted to the front. Anyway it is definitely period and in light of the info maybe designed by one of the crew members.
