EmeraldBat Posted March 25, 2010 #1 Posted March 25, 2010 It was supposed to be easy to learn something about the 465 FMS (Field Maintenance Squadron). So much for 'supposed to'! Where did they go? Found a bomber group, a Fighter Squadron, Fighter Interceptor Squadron, a Transportation Group. No griffins to be found. :ermm:
Teamski Posted March 25, 2010 #2 Posted March 25, 2010 The 465th FMS was assigned to the 465th Bomb Wing at Robins AFB 1962-1968. Non-operational squadrons (non-flying) assigned to wings usually have the same number as the parent wing. Exceptions always apply. -Ski
TLHorstead Posted March 26, 2010 #4 Posted March 26, 2010 The 465th FMS was assigned to the 465th Bomb Wing at Robins AFB 1962-1968. Non-operational squadrons (non-flying) assigned to wings usually have the same number as the parent wing. Exceptions always apply. -Ski The insignia was approved for the 4137th Field Maintenance Squadron at Robins AFB, Ga. In 1963 the 4137th STRATEGIC WING (a Major Air Command designated unit) and it's assigned squadrons were replaced by the 465th BOMBARDMENT WING (HEAVY) (a Major Air Command designated unit) (a Air Force designated unit) several units requested to use / continue the existing insignia ( this policy was allowed at the time because MAJCOM units [with 4 digit designations] are not / were not allowed to retain Histories, Battle Honors, & Insignia if the unit designation was ever used again. in 1968 the 465th Designation was replaced by the more Historic 19th BOMBARDMENT WING (HEAVY) as manpower and equipment were retained from the 465th the personnel kept using the 465th Insignia and the insignia began to show up with the 19th designation on the tab. the 19th FMS had an approved insignia and the Commander & Wing Historian failed in their duties to use their own insignia. I have a subdued version with the 19th Tab that dates 10 years after the change of designations - sorry I do not have a scan of that patch
EmeraldBat Posted March 26, 2010 Author #5 Posted March 26, 2010 TLHorstead, Thanks for the history about the unit, the patch, etc. As I try and figure out a little about the various patches I am working with - following the unit designation by name, number, etc. is sometimes interesting, sometimes frustrating. Thanks for your help with this one! Joy
