Unusual Armbands in a USAF BMTS Photo

I picked this up today at an auction. I would like to know what kind of armbands these guys are wearing? They also appear to be wearing shoulder cords, but they appear to different than any cord I have seen...They appear to be cloth strips. The armbands look like they either have two or three stripes, but the guy on the left is wearing a different rank on one shoulder than what the armband has on it, and some of the others appear to have no rank other than the armband. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance!

My guess is that they were the equivalent to today's green ropes. The armband may of given temporary authority to students over other airmen. Possibly, the fact that such rank can't be given at the local level (except for today's below the zone) made such armbands controversial, and thus the fourgerre worn today. Again, this is just conjecture.

In the 60's they had name plates for Dorm Chief, Squad Leader and Chapel Guide. Best I remember, they were white lettering on red.

The old picture is neat. I had not seen those type armbands before.
