It depicts a bust of the Dept of Illinois Department Commander for 1895, but I have not ascertained who that was at this time.

This was a pleasant surprise seeing Edwin Buck's medal. I have one of his original "Commander Dept. of Illinois, GAR" business cards so it's nice to be able to put a face to his name. Thanks.

These two additional badges came from a collection of about 20 that were just sold on eBay. I needed seven of them to add to my collection, but I was only lucky enough to obtain these two. The hunt goes on!

Very interesting to see the different years. Excellent pictures too of the medals... Only sad thing is, too bad we can't attend the encampment. :)

I find it interesting that after 1935 (the 69th Annual Encampment) the badge maker stopped putting the likeness of the Department Commander on the obverse of the pendant.

It is not known to me if this change in design was due to cost, availability of current likenesses for the Dept Commanders, or some other reason.

Does anyone have any idea why this change was made?
