BEAST Posted July 4, 2007 Share #1 Posted July 4, 2007 Yesterday I met a vet who served with the 3rd Infantry Regiment from 1955-1956. Even though he only served in the Army for two years, it was rather eventful. He was drafted after he finished collage where he earned a law degree and had passed the bar. After he completed his Infantry training, he was offered a commision in JAG. He turned it down and "tried out" for the Old Guard. He wa chosen and served with Able Company. He served on the colonial honor guard and participated in many functions. He never officially served at the tomb, but he was once allowed to walk the one hour at 3:00 am. His name was not entered in the book of those who guard the tomb. He had nothing but praise for the sentinels who guard the tomb. He said that his company was very sharp and very good, but the sentinels were sharper. After we talked a while he gave to me some of his insignia from his service with the Old Guard and from his time as a Chaplain's Assistant at Walter Reed. The following are two photos from his service and some of his insignia. Both his continental uniforms and dress blues were issued to him by the regiment and had to be turned in after he transferred. He served in Jr. ROTC in high school, but he is not sure where the LHMS cap eagle came from.
