A variety of tanks taken on a recent trip to Russia. I flew into Belgorod and then we drove through the region where the largest tank battle during the War took place, Kursk.

Here is a tank that is in front of a VFW Post in Ocala, FL. It was repainted about 5 or 6 months ago. Richard

Here's a photo of a sweet M60A1 Rise/Passive Main Battle Tank parked as a monument at the entrance to Camp Grayling, MI. This is the model tank that I cut my teeth on as a 2nd Lieutenant Armor Platoon Leader in the late 1970's. Great tank; loved the 105mm main gun and the M85 .50 cal commander's MG with telescopic sight. Back in those days, a unit could fire training and service rounds during gunnery which occurred two times per year. Good times. That tank required real skill on the part of the crew, with a coincidental range finder and no thermal imaging. Great experience growing up as a young man. There were some damn good NCOs that will killer gunners with that gun system.

great pic. I trained on the M60A1, 69-75fort Knox. Ky. N.G. That track played a very important part of my life. now i am a tank NUT, over 50 1/48 & 1/35 models with no end in site. thank for posting

Here is a photo of a nice Assault Tank M4A3E2 Jumbo (Jumbo Sherman). Only 254 of these bad boys were produced, so it is nice to run across an example. It is at Fort Carson, Colorado in front of the armored brigade combat team's HQ. There is a wealth of information about the Jumbo Sherman at the following website: http://www.tanks-encyclopedia.com/ww2/US/m4a3e2-jumbo-assault-tank

This particular Jumbo does not have the track end connector extensions (grousers) and it is fitted with the 75mm main gun. The folks at Fort Carson have this misidentified the tank as an Easy 8 (the bumper # shows it as M4A3E8, but is actually is an M4A3E2). It appears that both the gunner's sight aperture and the coaxial MG port on the gun mantle have been welded over also.

Here's a sherman in Tomah, Wi. There were some 16" shells nearby but wasn't able to get pics of them. Next time.

Next to the sherman. There's a number of other items nearby. A pack 75mm a few minutes away, a Japanese field piece and an M-60 are in town and I know Waupaca has an M-60 and huey as well. Marshfield has a Cobra and Stevens Point has an old canon. I'll try to get pictures of some of this stuff later. It's surprising how much of this stuff you see around sometimes.

Was able to locate that late 40s photo of the previously mentioned Pershing's at Knox (photo from around 1949, note the school still called Armored School rather than the new Armor Center & School that it would be called post 1950 with the new Armor Branch).

It was there beauties here and others like them scattered around the post, 22 in all, that were dragooned into first line service in the late summer of 1950 at Knox to equip the 70th Tank Battalion for immediate combat service in Korea, The Ft Knox Pershing monument tanks were only enough to equip one company of the battalion, A Co?, the other two companies got an emergency delivery of Easy 8s from Rock Island before shipping out to California, while better then nothing, they had a few problems, for one they apparently all lacked both their co-axle and hull machine guns, the battalion didn't even go to Japan first, it was sent directly to Pusan and the front upon arrival..

This is a great thread! Here are a few taken at Vandenberg AFB about 4-5 years ago.

Here is a picture taken at the entrance to the Kubinka army base in Russia in 2001. That is me on the right with two of my co-workers in front of a JS-3. Just down the road behind the tank is the main gate. Try as we might, we could not get them to let us in to see the armor collection. For those that may not know, Kubinka houses one of the largest collections of armor in the world. Back in 2001, the collection was not open to the public except with special permission, which we did not have. And bribes didn't work, we tried. The second picture was taken through the gate of some of the tanks that were outside. One is an M5 Stuart, so I hope this post will meet the requirements of this site since it is a U.S. tank.

post-32632-0-80257500-1563474783.jpgNot a tank but a modern-ish artillery piece, 155mm. On a trip back from Montana, my wife and I stopped in Kellogg Idaho. This piece was in a nice memorial for Idaho veterens. Their was also a nice plaque for Lt. Frank Reasoner; Medal of Honor awardee, Vietnam War.

It's my understanding that they have loosened up a bit, and the museum in now more accessible to tourists.

Yes, I have heard that, too. I sure wish it had been that way in 2001. That was probably my only chance to see it in person.

Hi folks, here's another display getting ready to be shipped back to the land of the big PX! I know this is not a tank, but I thought it might be interesting enough to post it here.

This halftrack was being stored in Buedingen, Germany - Armstrong Kaserne. It was in a horrible condidtion and looked like it was sitting outside in the very back of the motor pool for many year. Some guys from 1-1 Cav (back then part of 1st AD 4th Bde) restored it for display at the 4th Bde Motor Pool, Fliegerhorst Kasern Hanau. It was then transported to Fliegerhorst Kaserne, Hanau, Germany in January of 2006 and then (when 4th Bde inactivated) shipped (via Rotterdam) to the US and A.

Do you think it was from the old 3rd AD . I think they had a runner at the ROCK. We had a static M-24 in Gelnhausen
