Some of you might find this interesting http://shermantankoverloon.nl/?id=1&lan=en&sz=2

You can follow the restoration of a Sherman tank which will be placed on the Museum Square in Overloon (Holland) to commemorate the casualties of the American 7th Armored Division (The Lucky 7th) in the Battle of Overloon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Overloon

In the museum itself (Liberty Park) there are many more tanks (and other vehicles) from all WWII belligerents to see.

Hooviedude, the Hetzer is now IN the museum.

Sabrejet is correct; the one at the Bastogne Museum is an Achilles TD.

Erwin

Erwin, when was it put indoors? And I thought it used to be painted in a camo scheme? I will have to dig out my photos from then.

The Hetzer was repainted and put inside.

It was integrated in a completely new diorama.

Before that, it stood outside in camo with unit markings, then was repainted in desert yellow without any markings.

I'm trying to think where the Achilles ended up (for some reason I think it was moved to LaRoche).

It has been a while since I was there (last time I visited the museum was with a good buddy from the US).

Here are a few pics of an M4A3E8 "Easy Eight" Sherman that resides at American Legion Post 21 in Rogersville, TN. I took these pics in 2007. I believe this is the only Sherman at an American Legion Post in Tennessee.

Seems to be in a very good condition.

It bears the markings of the 4AD as in the 1950s.

Erwin

The 278th ACR is a local Tennessee National Guard unit and was activated during the Korean War, so that makes sense.

When the Am Legion acquired this Sherman, one stipulation of the purchase was that it be made inoperable. Therefore it cannot travel under its own power. However, I believe most of the interior still remains intact.

I saw a Sherman yesterday in Florrisant, MO, a suburb on the north side of St Louis. It was a high velocity 76mm with the late suspension so I assume an M4A3E8. I don't know enough about them to tell for sure. It was in a park.

I ran across this tank in Foster Park at Kokomo, Indiana. Sorry for the picture, I got it off the internet...I was driving through town with my wife on the way to the casino and she wouldn't let me stop. Saying something like "when did you ever start taking pictures of tanks?"

Very nice monument.

40th Tank Battalion Sherman, did they liberate Overloon?

Erwin

Well, the battle of Overloon was a large scale battle in which the whole of the the US 7th Armored Division was involved. Tank battalions, armored infantry battalions and artillery. Unfortunately the attack by the US 7th Armored Division on Overloon failed. The British 3rd Infantry Division and the British 11th Armoured Division took over and finally succeeded.

WOW. The Firefly brings back memories. Back in the early 70's I would spend the summers with family and friends in Europe. One year I went to visit my old friend Charles Delbeque in Belgium. His father was well connected and he got us into the The war museum in Brussels on a day it was closed. The Firefly was inside at the time and needed to be moved the day we were there. They let us jump aboard for the ride. I'll never forget it.

M4 at the French Army exit leading off Utah Beach. This tank, until recently, bore Free French 2e Division Blindée markings but has been re-painted. Hopefully, the colourful markings will ultimately be restored?

MAA1 76mm HVSS at Utah Beach. This vehicle has been painted a rather strange dull brown colour!

This Duplex-drive M4A1 was recovered from the sea just off Slapton Sands, Devon, England and is now a permanent memorial to the 946 US servicemen who died in Exercise Tiger, April '44. This was to be a landing rehearsal for D-Day, but unfortunately the convoy of LSTs was intercepted by German E-boats and several USN vessels were sunk with heavy loss of life. This was potentially disastrous as the whole Overlord operation was feared compromised. In the event, it was not, but the truth surrounding what befell Exercise Tiger was allegedly covered up by SHAEF.

Another Sherman DD tank. This one is a permanent memorial to the Canadians who came ashore at Juno Beach on June 6, 1944.

Another Normandy tank monument. This Free French M4 is on the brow of a hill and commands a panoramic view over the beach at Arromanches, where the British Mulberry Harbour was constructed.

Ian, what you might be seeing is the effects of years of sunlight on OD paint. If you look further down in the thread you will see another Sherman where the paint is turning that same dark brown color. The years of neglect also explain the amount of rust you are seeing as well.

Yes Gil...that had occurred to me too...but it's even brown in the shaded areas where you'd expect there to be some traces of OD?

I found this treasure in the small city of Redwood Falls, Minnesota. It has a nice dedication on the side, in memory of one of Redwood Falls men killed in action in Korea. It did my heart good to see kids playing on and around this tank when I found it. I made sure to have them look at the dedication on the side.

Whats up with the muzzle brake on the main gun??? Is that original or some add on deal? Jut seemed to me to look a bit "off" I guess. Maybe it is because I am used to seeing Sherman's without them.

I have no idea what exact model this one is - sorry. Enjoy!

It's an early M4A3. Later models had a 45 degree sloped glacis. As for that muzzle-brake....?!
