snafu100 Posted February 21, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 21, 2010 thru the years in talking with other soldiers someone always comes up with a nick name or some odd description for the Unit or Division they were in or one they didn't want to be in -- I use to work with an E-8 who had a book with all the Army patches and there history - I cant remember for sure but I thought there along side there name was there nickname (again not sure) anyway this guy knew a lot other names for the different patches - mine the 34th Infantry Division (GO MINNESOTA) or as you look at the patch THE RED BULLS any body else -Pete
PATCHRAT Posted February 21, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 21, 2010 Some times the UNofficial nicknames make thier way into use. here is an example for the 1 AD 'OLD IRONSIDES" changed to OLD IRONSHAFT. This patch came from a shop in Kuwait in late 2005

36-tex Posted February 21, 2010 Share #4 Posted February 21, 2010 Look in the REFERENCE section on this forum for Shoulder Patches. Most of the official nicknames are there. BUT, the unofficial names are the best: Electric Strawberry

vzemke Posted February 21, 2010 Share #7 Posted February 21, 2010 My favorite soldier nickname for a patch is the Military District Wastington patch, which some Old Guard troops I went through a course with kept calling the "Lorena Bobbit" patch. Now I can never look at it the same way.

"The Horse they never rode, the line they never crossed and the color speaks for itself." It may be an Army urban legend, but according to a friend at TRADOC, there is a growing movement to change the shoulder patch of the 42nd Division as the rainbow taken other meanings in modern times. Teamski Posted February 21, 2010 Share #12 Posted February 21, 2010 When I got to Travis in early 1989, I did my patch tour of the base and got this patch off our sister squadron that worked on C-141's. The patch was quite disliked. People described it as the "Rat on the bong" patch. -Ski

cwnorma Posted February 21, 2010 Share #15 Posted February 21, 2010 Gentle reminder: All of us G.I.s (current and former) know that our humor can get a little "salty" sometimes. Please remember this is a "family" forum. No one has crossed the line yet; so don't take it personally--just wanted to keep the discussion at the "PG" level.
