1903 Springfield Oiler - round end

Recommended Posts

I've had several oilers for the 1903 Springfield / 1917 Enfield. They have all had flat ends under the caps.

This one is rounded at the oil end.

I also noticed the threader / thong is a brass color vs. aluminum colored.

I am wondering if these are regular variations or something else.

Thanks for your help.

The ones with the rounded ends like yours are known as third variation oilers. The first variation is flat on both ends and lacks the leather bumper on the end,the second variation is the same with the addition of the leather bumper. The pull through looks to be the common brass one issued until the introduction of the steel pull through during WW2.
