WWII USS FRANKLIN REUNION DISPLAY

Recommended Posts

Back in Sept 2006 , the USS Franklin had their reunion here in Seattle. I took the opportunity to contact the chairperson and offered to do a display of USS Franklin memorabilia from WWII. They accepted and the attached photos are from the reunion. I also brought my son along so that he could meet some REAL heroes.

I featured some medal groups and other memorabilia to a couple of Naval Aviators who had served on the USS Franklin, both of whom were KIA. I also featured other aviation items as well.

I just got these photos and thought I would share them.

It was very rewarding and I got to meet some great people!

Kurt

How many vets showed up and what was their reaction?

I drove down to Seattle last weekend - we could have met for lunch or dinner at my fave pizza place - Olympia pizza (or maybe it's Olympic) on Queen Anne Hill...about 10 minutes away from the Needle. (My buddy lives over in Magnolia)

Wanted: Disney World War II related items.

Nice job Kurt.

What were the vets reactions on your display. They probably thought none of this stuff was collect able. Is your son interested in your memorabilia.

Nick

Collecting Marine Raider Groups

On the battlefield, Pfc Edward Ahrens, an Able Company BAR man, lay dying, soaked in his own blood.

As his company commander, Lew Walt cradled him in his arms, he surveyed the scene around them. Nearby lay a Japanese officer, a sergeant, and thirteen enlisted men, all dead. Ahrens had been shot twice in the chest and bayoneted three times. He whispered to Walt, "Captain, they tried to come over me last night, but I don't think they made it." Choking back tears, Walt replied softly, "They didn't, Eddy. They didn't."

Wonderful display, Kurt. I'm sure it was well appreciated. There nothing quite like listening to the veterans' stories as they look over items that they were so directly connected to. Kudos to you.

I am actively seeking USMC Named Good Conduct Medals and items pertaining to the USS Indianapolis CA35.

Thanks for the comments Guys!

Dave- Let me know the next time you are in Seattle!!!

There were probably 20-30 vets there plus their families. Most of them thought it was interesting and talked to me about it. I actually got more questions from their wives and kids.

There was one vet in particular I talked to for quite a long time. He was an aircraft maintenance officer on the hanger deck. He was blown over the side of the ship by an explosion and was picked up by a destroyer. Capt Gehres ( the ships captain ) actually tried to have him court-martialed for abandoning his post. Gehres tried to have all the men who jumped overboard or onto other ships court-martialed , but that idea was not met with much enthusiasm by the Navy Dept.

My son and I with PhoM1c Al Bullock. He took almost all of the shots of the USS Franklin on fire that day. He gave me a signed copy of one of his photographs.

My wife and I were attending a Navy ball and just so happened that the Franklin veterans were having a reunion next door. I talked to them about Gary's Medal of Honor and they gave me a piece of the deck of the Franklin, which I still have.
