LEGION of MERIT--Showcase

The Legion of Merit has four degrees but only the degree of Legionnaire should be awarded to US military personel.

By a mistake only a few of the degree of Officer were awarded to US military personel.

General Lyman Louis Lemnitzer was one of these and he has worn this on his ribbon bar.

This is the first time I saw a Legion of Merit ribbon with gold stars and a oak leaf cluster.

Here is the link to the original topic

http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/299475-unusual-usmc-generals-ribbon-set/

USMC Lieutenant General "... Woods was awarded his first three Legions of Merit (to include a V device for valor) by the Department of the Navy. His fourth award of the Legion of Merit came from an Army command. Thus, his ribbon bar shows two gold stars, one bronze oak leaf cluster, and the V device as awarded for valor as a Marine officer in World War II. "

Thanks to Allen for the information.

I have an early LOM CC cased from our friend Joe here on the forum......which I believe is posted somewhere in this thread. Arrived today was a beautiful cased set for a BB&B Chief Commander as pretty as she can be. #53. The stamping of the BB&B looks like B&B because the first B didn't stamp completely but you can see the edge of the letter. Also the S from STERLING is also a partial strike but visible under the loupe. The patina and enamel is marvelous. Badge has a beautiful high vault to it....just a beauty IMO

Are these traceable? i have a navy #471 and would love to get some background.

@ dskjl

Please post pictures of the front and reverse.

What your #471 makes a Navy version ?

The number and the fact that the brooch is an army pattern leads me to believe that this is an army issued medal. Perhaps the army issued a medal to a naval officer?

RADM Arthur G. Robinson, Black Widow Navy Cross, Legion of Merit, Yangtze Service group. The Legion of Merit is an Army contract medal with the larger suspension ring and different brooch than the US Mint Navy Contract medals, which were scarcer, so not uncommon to be seen in WW2 Navy LOM groups.

I posted a separate topic about this medal. Check the below link.

This Officer grade Legion of Merit was awarded in 1977 to the Dutch Air Attaché Colonel Joop J.F. van Brussel RNLAF. It is made by Simco.
