It looks legit to me! Been looking to get one of those numbered ones for myself, but haven't found one yet. I did see a China medal of the same style, with a 3 digit rim number, with the middle digit offset just like yours. Very nice!

Yeah, it looks really good. According to TCOD, the pre-WWII Marine issues were the only ones numbered, and were not prefixed. The Marines numbered the medals, not the mint.

As Teamski pointed out, the rim number is not official. Also, the ribbon has been replaced and the brooch is not the correct type used by the US Mint.

Good eye. The brooch looks like an earlier one as used on the Haitian Campaign medal.

Most common on WWI Victory medals, the 1919 Haiti would have a whitehead and hoag trademark

How deep were you into it, the box was period and the NNC insignia was nice!!

The early USN contract China Service medal had a US MINT wrap brooch and a ring top. The brooch is wrong on this one ( looks like a WWII US Army air medal brooch). Someone definately really screwed this one up by stamping a number on it. Only the ring top USMC versions are numbered.

Well, I feel like a know-nothing-know-it-all! Nonetheless, this was a very big opportunity for me, since I could very well have gone for this one myself! Comparining these pics and the info here from other members with some pics from another non-messed with Marine Corps China medal I've been eyeing, the differences do clearly jump out. The pin, hinge and catch that are affixed to the broach are silver or grayish in color on an original one, right? But I did not notice a Whitehead Hoag hallmark on either. Does anyone have a closeup pic of this hallmark on a China Svc they could post? Did W-H do all of the contracts, Marines included (Can't lay my hands on any of my references at the moment)?

Thanks,

You and me both. The Call of Duty mentions that the Haitian medal came with and without the Hoag hallmarks. No substitute for looking at the real thing, I guess.

Only the 1919 Haitian brooch has that hallmark. And, it's not visible on all of those.

Bill,

What is your opinion on a price for the box and the NNC pin. Then I can evaluate weather to keep them and just scratch the medal so it does not go any further in the collecting field.

Here is a pic of one I got years ago from ebay for cheap. It is a later issue but came in the box with some misc. merchant marine items. Notice the smaller size of the box and the " " marks above the china service.

Well, bottom line it looks like someone screwed up a good prewar china service (note the "milling" on the edge), if it was just an unnumbered planchet I'd say it was worth $25.00, the box is worth $10.00, the ribbon and broach is worth $5.00 and the NNC pin is worth $25.00.

I would pay (if I wanted it) around 40 to 45 dollars, any more than that is not worth dealing with.
