This type of ammo can was intended to be used by Browning .30 Heavy machine gun grews, the clip om it locks it to the M1917A1 tripod cradle. Fits on the left side of the cradle for feeding the gun. Otherwise could also be used by the .30 BMG light MG. in lieu of the standard M1 ammo can. The other up side to this can over the previous oak ammo boxes that excisted from WW1 to the mid WW2 years is that this can (M1A1), and the standard M1 ammo can had a seal. So you did not have to do as much maintenance on the ammo once packed in the can. No more taking 250 rounds out to clean and hang to dry form the wood ammo box since the new ones were sealed by a rubber O-ring to keep out the elements. Also for further information go to this site.

This is my M1917 A1 BMG. On the cradle mount is the WW1 wood ammo box. On the floor below it are some M1 ammo cans And 1 M1A1(far right dirty top). The clamp on your can hooks over the bracket that hols the wood box on the cradle. If you are unable to figure it out after looking on Jon's BMG site let me know and I'll take some more pix. And yes any vehicle that used a pintle that accepted the cradle pin would work. I just don't have any pix of one. Some were on LCVP's , LVT-4's, M3 scout cars and a few others I can't think of right now.

Here's 2 that arrived recently from Greece, note the yellow markings, I can't quite work out why one was repacked with 192 rounds or if they are fake markings, the tin with the 192 stencil has been repainted but the paint is flaking and the original paint underneath looks to still be in pretty good condition.

In 8 round enbloc clips for the M1 rifles?

I see it says "8" and I'm going to guess that's a reference to the 8 round clip.

Agree

192 rounds is 4 bandoleers of 48 rounds.Have seen other larger cans marked 240)5 bandoleers)The yellow markings look like enblocs to me as well.
