Sticky vinyl?

I have a private purchase visor cap and the sweatband, which I believe if vinyl or some other type of fake leather, is a bit sticky all around. Water does not get rid of it...

My Dad who works on cars occasionally suggested using rubbing alcohol. There were a number of interior parts that were vinyl on my car and we took care of the stick by rubbing everything down with alcohol. Is this a safe method? I figure it isn't going to harm the material regardless of what it is.

Hey Rob-sounds like the plasticizers (yep that's a real word) are breaking down. I would try a little alcohol on a small place and see what happens, but it will probably turn the surface white. Not much you can do about it as far as I know. Sorry...

Rob,

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do. Alcohol will turn the surface white, don't use it. Acetone would have a similar effect. Your best bet is to keep it in a stable environment with constant, non-fluctuating humidity. 45-65% Rh and 68 +/- 3 degrees is ideal.

I've had a simular problem with East German military items made of plastic and rubber. I've found that a small amount of talcum powder applied to the sticky area works miracles in reducing or eliminating the problem and does not permantly change the material as a petroleum based application may.
