My West Point Patches

The large 7-inch wide chevrons are worn on Dress Gray and Full Dress Gray. The dress gray are "subdued" black on gray. The full dress gray are gold lace on a gray backing. The USMA is the only Army institution remaining which still uses chevrons to designate officers, though in the early 19th C. it was common in the Regular Army as well.

Here are a pair of subdued Dress Gray chevrons. The 5 bars signify Battaliion Commander, a very high-ranking cadet.

Another pair, full color gold lace for full dress gray. Again, 5-bar battalion commander pair. In this variation, the point of the chevron is not as tall as in some other examples.

A new Recondo patch today. this one has had a clutchback device added and another layer of fabric sewn on the back. I wasn't expecting that! This is an older-looking color, OD or darkish brown.

Another new USMA recondo patch. this one looks fairly contemporary, a bit green rather than tan, although the photo doesn't show the color truly.

I got two new USMAPS tabs the other day. One is 1960's or earlier, the r/w/b one.

I'm intending to marry the USMA Prep tabs to some patches. I had to use one of my felt cadre patches to match up as best I could on the R/W/B one. I tried to match the edge color as well as I could for the black/gray/gold f/c one.

Plus a couple of new acquisitions from Proud Kraut's (Lars's) recent sale: embroidered cadre patch from 1960's/earlier (r/w/b) and a full color older cut edge cadre patch (1960's/later)

where do you find all these class blazer patches? I'd expect them to be really hard to find.

I troll eBay quite a bit. That's where I have found them, but you have to be patient cuz they are rare and don't come up that often. I hesitated starting that part of the collection because once you start it could be endless! :D

This is a wonderful thread. I love USMA related material. I live in NYC and often go with my wife for brunch at the Thayer hotel with friends in the Academy. I have often visited the Academy museum and admired the early West Point uniforms. Does anyone have any early (pre-WWII) USMA related insignia and/or uniforms to show. I seem to rememeber a website which displayed a very early (pre-Civil War) cadet coat, but I can not remember which site it was.

Cheers,

Dave.

USMA jump ovals. Some West Point cadets qualified for air training in WWII and the early 1950's, but not after the USAFA was established in 1955. These ovals don't appear to me to date from the WWII era, so may be replicas. I'm not certain.

That's incorrect, USMA sends cadets to the Basic Airborne Course at Ft Benning every year.

Google "west point cadets attend airborne school"

Oh, thanks for the info :)

I assumed it was related to flight training when they had such AT West Point (Stewart Field, iirc). They get a specific "West Point" jump oval for a summer course at Ft. Benning? Good to know. I have seen a lot of cadet uniforms with air assault badges but nothing current with jump ovals.

The oval and flash are listed as USMA Airborne Detachment which I assume is regular Army Airborne personnel assigned to West Point. Airborne Detachment HHC, 1-1 IN.

The airborne detachment serving West Point, the regular Army folks, I thought had the oval that is in post #2, which is different from the one shown in that post, which I thought was earned by cadets. I will go back and look in some of my books to see if I can find anything further. I'm pretty confused, so appreciate your input :) ETA: Oh, and I am assuming your letters/numbers are from a reference work? can you elucidate for the uninitiated?

Oops, my mistake for not looking back before posting. Here's a thought, based on the WAG system, perhaps (if it is in fact a cadet item) is/was worn by the USMA Parachute Team.

That would make sense.

More recently acquired 1950's and earlier cadre red/white/blue shoulder sleeve patches. Three different kinds: full embroidered, felt, and twill. the full embroidered version does not include any eyeholes in the greek helmet.

Here is a patch version of the blue and gold cadre collar device, and just about the same size as the DUI shields. This poor little patch has seen better days!

This looks to me like a souvenir patch, Army Mule for a fan of the athletic teams. I think this is an older item, before they updated to the "Black Knights"
