Bluejacket Posted February 23, 2014 Share #101 Posted February 23, 2014 Thanks Bluejack - here is the 1914 piece. George medal_bk2.jpg medal_fr3.jpg Cap_george Your 1914 named medal was produced by Bastian Brothers in one of two contracts they had with the Navy. The first was for 3,000 medals in Dec. 1919, and the second was for an estimated 1,000 medal in late 1922. So your medal was either a late issue, or a replacement for a lost medal. Either way, it was probably issued in the early 1920's. Thanks for posting it. Bluejacket

jmar Posted February 23, 2014 Share #103 Posted February 23, 2014 Here is a Good Conduct Medal I think you will enjoy. The engraver misspelled his name. Awesome. A moment that changed our lives here in the U.S. forever, frozen in time. Thank you for posting it.
jmar Posted February 23, 2014 Share #104 Posted February 23, 2014 So many great pieces here, I hope it keeps going and going... Here's one that "got away" a survivor from the USS Nevada during that fateful day.
jmar Posted February 23, 2014 Share #105 Posted February 23, 2014 Another of my favs, I wonder how many hand engravers of this caliber still remain today.
jmar Posted February 23, 2014 Share #106 Posted February 23, 2014 One more for now, this honored Veteran served on the USS Mustin DD-413, USS Orion AS-18 and USS Pelias AS-14.

cap_george Posted February 24, 2014 Share #108 Posted February 24, 2014 Thanks Bluejacket - I went through Lane's paperwork. His 1914 discharge said Badge ordered. Two documents for 1918 list him as recommended for the Good Conduct Medal. Note he did not get a GC Bar for 1918 (marks not high enough). So you are probably correct. I also have a 1918 dated GC that is 3mm thick. George
cap_george Posted February 28, 2014 Share #109 Posted February 28, 2014 Just a note Bluejacket, I was wrong on the 1918 GC it is 2mm - US Mint piece. Note: checking die differences. dates:1903, 1915, 1918, 1929, 1932, 1933, 1934, 1936. All 2mm US Mint. These have well defined square gun ports on the Constitution. The rope boarder around the ship is well defined and uniform. Date: 1914 contract piece is 3mm. The gun ports on the Constitution are round shaped. The rope boarder is not uniform. Dates: 1921 (2), 1923 contract pieces are 2.5mm and 2.6mm. The gun ports on the Constitution are round shaped. The rope boarder is not uniform. jmar Posted March 1, 2014 Share #110 Posted March 1, 2014 Hi gang! Let's keep this one going! So many wonderful pieces here, and just think of what's out there! I'll add a few more, and once I get scanning, I'll add some more. In keeping with the topic I'm not posting groups, just the GCMs. I'm also going to show only a close up of the engraving on those that do not have bars to help conserve server use. Thanks to all who have posted and to those who have read and replied. And thanks again to Kurt who started it all. Best wishes to all, Joe

MDR75 Posted June 20, 2014 Share #113 Posted June 20, 2014 What do you think about this early Navy Good Conduct? Found it at Jeff's web site and thinking about jumping in. http://www.floydmedals.com/order/exec/frmProductDetails.aspx?abs=1&productid=MTI0Mg==&CatID=MQ==&1=1 I'll post a photo when I can. Bluejacket Posted June 20, 2014 Share #114 Posted June 20, 2014 MDR75, The Badge is correct, as is the suspension. Ribbon, as noted, a replacement but that's very common. The price.....I'd be happy to sell mine for that but won't hold my breath. Bluejacket
MDR75 Posted June 21, 2014 Share #115 Posted June 21, 2014 Bluejacket Thanks for the reply, yeah it's not cheap but since they don't show up that often.....anyhow thanks for the info. Mikey
kanemono Posted June 22, 2014 Share #116 Posted June 22, 2014 Here is a pre-1900 GCM and it's named Sampson medal. Everything is to the USS New York. This is part of a 13 medal Navy Cross group. The man was enlisted from 1893 to 1917 when he was commissioned. Dick Here is the USS New York.

hink441 Posted December 17, 2014 Share #119 Posted December 17, 2014 Very nice GCM. Could have posted it in the "I Hate My Name" thread also. W HaHa!! Very true, I am sure he was teased endlessly!! Here is another one from 1927. It is in rough shape and I believe it is fire damaged. Bibencio Palma from the USS McCawley 276.
hink441 Posted January 25, 2015 Share #120 Posted January 25, 2015 Here is another one I just acquired, planchet only. Pretty late medal with a CSC number. The Rail was a small ship (Minesweeper, later Fleet Tug) with around a 72 man crew. This boat was also at Pearl Harbor on that historic day. CorsairAce Posted May 25, 2016 Share #123 Posted May 25, 2016 This seems like a good topic to bring back up. Here are two Navy Good Conduct WWI Destroyer groups I've gotten over the last 6 months. The top group is for Arthur O. Gairing originally on the USS Leary Sept 28, 1920. The two bars are for the USS Falcon and Submarine Base New London Conn. The Mexican Service medal is numbered 8443. The bottom group is for Adolph Weighel on the USS Satter Lee. Ironically this was given two days later than Gairing's dated September 30, 1920. CorsairAce Posted May 25, 2016 Share #124 Posted May 25, 2016 This next one was picked up a few months ago and I'm not sure if the Submarine bar goes with it. I haven't been able to find where this medal applies to him. This medal is for George Merkel, USS New Hampshire April 18, 1915. The bar is for the USS Rathburne. zsmith Posted May 25, 2016 Share #125 Posted May 25, 2016 Very cool thread with some really nice medals. I wish they had kept the old design of the Navy GCM with the enlistment bars. I don't have a picture of my GCM but I wish I had one to post. It took me 7 years to get my first one!
