Scarecrow Posted November 15, 2022 #1626 Posted November 15, 2022 Hi Baz, Hope you don't mind me hijacking your thread to show just a few of my helmets. Didn't think it made much sense to start a new thread when we already have this great thread that you started. Shown are four deck helmets rigger made into flight helmets (green, blue, white and brown). The last is a pre-war one like yours. I think these are referred to as Bedford Cord. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Hope you enjoy seeing these.

You are correct, the last one is called Bedford cord and is pre war as you said. The penultimate one has what looks like the rare cloth covered earcups. Thanks for posting those truly outstanding flight helmets. Can't wait to see more
Scarecrow Posted November 27, 2022 #1628 Posted November 27, 2022 Hi Tom, These are the only Id'd flight helmets that I have. They belonged to William Edward Hall MOH winner for his actions at the Battle of Coral Sea. On May 7th he participated in the destruction of the Japanese carrier Shoho and on the 8th, despite being severely wounded, his citation says he destroyed 3 enemy aircraft. I have a few more of his items but no uniforms. (and no MOH or Ribbon). The first is his WWII flight helmet. The MkII goggles were his but I had to replace the pad (I saved it) as it was too badly deteriorated. The second helmet is his Gentex H-4 from his Korean War service, along with his goggles and his MS22001 Oxygen mask. Like William Holden in the "Bridges At Toko-RI", he was apparently called back for service in the Korean conflict.

bazelot Posted May 23, 2023 Author #1630 Posted May 23, 2023 Latest setup. VBF-93 pilot Bill C. Young. Graduated in August 1944. Service number 413992. Was on both uss boxer and uss Hornet. Helmet is a shearling type with added tc66 earcups and th37 receivers. Goggles and oxy mask are from the same pilot.
jerry_k Posted May 23, 2023 #1631 Posted May 23, 2023 Nice set up Tom, well done! I like the early war 02 mask. One question why do you snapped o2 mask strap opposite? Or this is only a photo illusion? Take care, Jerry

Take care, Jerry Jerry, lol. thanks for pointing it out, in my haste i just grabbed the first strap and used it. I will change it. This mask is actually really early for an A14, it is dated December '43
jerry_k Posted May 23, 2023 #1633 Posted May 23, 2023 Be careful when you un-snapped a strap to not pulled out the snap. Cool, great helmet and mask! Take care, Jerry

bazelot Posted September 8, 2023 Author #1635 Posted September 8, 2023 Just acquired this beautiful M450 with volcano earcups. Everything, including the goggles, came together. I am working on finding a name for the original owner:
warguy Posted September 8, 2023 #1636 Posted September 8, 2023 Wow, that is really a magnificent example. Thanks for sharing.

bazelot Posted September 11, 2023 Author #1638 Posted September 11, 2023 Next one is a very nice 1092 helmet equipped with volcano earcups. It is name to Robert Keifer who was a pilot with vs-47 (first desigbation on March 1st 1943) and post war he was with Attack Squadron 652 on Corsairs. The helmet came as a grouping with 2 other helmets, a flight suit, squadron patch, gloves, docs...
bazelot Posted September 11, 2023 Author #1639 Posted September 11, 2023 The rest of the grouping: Pilot wearing the helmet:
jerry_k Posted September 12, 2023 #1640 Posted September 12, 2023 Wow great helmets Tom. What is else inside the footlocker? Cheers, Jerry

Cheers, Jerry Thanks Jerry, aside from the obvious helmets, there are ranks. 2 pairs of pilot gloves. A lot of pictures, correspondence and paperwork. There is a notebook dated 1942-1943 with very interesting, though mundane, day to day reminders and to do lists. He had a horrendous handwriting though and it is hard to read. There is also a post war visor for a flight helmet that seems to be brand new.
bazelot Posted November 21, 2024 Author #1642 Posted November 21, 2024 Latest setup i just acquired. Those are nowxgetting really hard to find. This is a NAF 1092 leather helmet with added AAF earcups secured with chamois.
bazelot Posted February 2 Author #1644 Posted February 2 Next up is a nicely modified AN-6542-1 flight helmet. The oxy tabs were removed and in their stead the pilot installed oxy mask strips from the A14 oxygen mask kit. I love those modifications and they do not come up for sale very often. Helmet is dusplayed with a truly NOS pair of mk IV goggles.
