bazelot Posted November 15, 2014 Author Share #826 Posted November 15, 2014 The setup includes the original M1944 goggles which came in the original box. THis setup is, I believe the exact one he is wearing on the flight deck picture

bazelot Posted November 21, 2014 Author Share #835 Posted November 21, 2014 I just acquired another wonderful modified deck helmet that belonged to VBF-1 pilot Harold Kenneth Lindquist. Lindquist saw action at the end of the war with VBF-1 and was recommended for the DFC and Air Medal. Harold Lindquist got his wings in 1943 and at the end of 1944 was sent to the forward area with VB-100 which was a training unit. On April 17th 1945 he joined VBF-1 on the USS Bennington. VBF-1 then conducted strikes against the Japanese home islands from June 17th to mid August. I managed to find the whole War Diary of VBF-1. There I found pictures of him and the whole squadron. The helmet is a rare green deck helmet (with 288s contract tag still attached). This one is rigger modified with accoustic earcups, oxy mask snaps, white goggle straps. In the VF-1 book there is a picture of pilots wearing deck helmets with the exact same type of modifications and one particular helmet that could be the one I now have. This one saw a lot of cockpit use but is still in great shape Extremely happy with this newest acquisition and the history that came with it. bazelot Posted November 22, 2014 Author Share #839 Posted November 22, 2014 The flight deck picture with the potential candidate for that helmet, it looks like the helmet on the picture is crunched up on top which makes the white goggle straps appear to be closer to one another:

bazelot Posted December 18, 2014 Author Share #841 Posted December 18, 2014 Latest rigger modified deck helmet. I should get the name of the original owner soon. White deck helmet modified with acoustic earcups, painted receivers and goggle straps on the back. I really like the added snaps on the back for the straps. The funny think is, I have a Modified M-450 with added acoustic earcups and exact same receivers (same brand also) where the receivers are also painted red., I wonder if they were on the same ship.... [email protected] Posted December 20, 2014 Share #844 Posted December 20, 2014 Here's a updated photo with the my new goggles. Both of them belonged to Howard C Wagenhals who flew C-46 Commandos in the Pacific. flight helmets.jpg Lt. Howard C Wagenhals, USMC is my uncle. I thought it very interesting that you happened across some of his gear after 70 some odd years! I am curious how you came about the helmets and in particular, the photo of Howard as a Naval Air Cadet. Howard's brothers were also decorated WWII vets; one Army and one Navy. Cleaning out the attic the other day and ran across How's duffle bag with "Lt. H. C. Wagenhals USMC" written across it in large letters with a marks-a-lot. I am also in touch with his family now and again, his wife is still with us although Howard passed some years ago. Just felt the need to respond to your post. Feel free to contact me. I bought the 2 pairs of goggles the photos a book and a pillow case from a member on here. Thanks for the response. I am curious about the title/author of the book. Might be nice to know what he was reading about back then. Also, were the photos loose when you got them? and you mounted them? I wonder if there might be something written on the back. Trying to discover what unit he was in. Family doesn't know/remember. I also have a post war photo of Howard with his father and brothers - 1950 or so - tried to upload here but file size too large. Probably shouldn't clog up the forum with this but I didn't see a PM button on your post. Feel free to e-mail me and I'll e-mail you the photo.
