bazelot Posted July 29, 2020 Author Share #1528 Posted July 29, 2020 Latest and greatest, pre war setup named to Ensign Russell T. Lord. He flew SBD Dauntless dive bombers with VB-98, and served in Bougainville, Truk, and all around the Solomon Islands. He was the CO of VB-98. The April 1944 reports in Fold 3 show that Lord was promoted to LCDR, retroactive to March 1st 1944. Some forum members found a lot of information, including mission reports and I am attaching them to this thread as well. Helmet is nicely named in several locations on the helmet. Looks like this one saw a lot of action. Fold 3 has all the action reports for VB-98 and i attached a few.

I just noticed that I typed out post war and it should have been prewar setups are hard to come by. Your collection is impressive and really appreciate you sharing them with the collecting community, I should start doing the same. Gregg

bazelot Posted August 27, 2020 Author Share #1537 Posted August 27, 2020 Latest and greatest. Modified deck helmet with tc66 earcups. There is a name on the strap but really hard to read. Helmet has seen a lot of flight time and is soiled just as I like them :). It was modified to fit a smaller head.
KASTAUFFER Posted August 27, 2020 Share #1538 Posted August 27, 2020 Here are a couple of my new helmets to Major Frank W Stuhlman who flew with VMTB-232 in WWII and VMF-214 In Korea . These are part of a much larger group to include other flight gear, his flight jacket, flight logbooks and other items. He earned a DFC in both wars. These two helmets haven’t been touched since he last wore them. The goggles on the 1092 were attached to it when I got it and I left them as is. jerry_k Posted August 28, 2020 Share #1540 Posted August 28, 2020 Hi Tom. Looks like a nice helmet. It was white deck? I like a modification to make it smaller. I also found something new: 1067 goggle kit

Is the jacket WWII or korea? Hi Tom The jacket is an M-422A from WWII, but the VMF-214 patch is Korean War vintage. He became a Major during the Korean War, so since his nametag says Capt it could WWII or Korea, but my guess its from Korea. It looks like a Korean War tag. Ill try to lay it all out and take a pic, Kurt
KASTAUFFER Posted August 28, 2020 Share #1543 Posted August 28, 2020 The boots are Australian and are marked using the same stamping kit used to make flight jacket name tags. The USMC hospital corpsman knife was rigger modified to wear in flight. The scarf is signed by all the pilots from VMTB-
