Latest setup. Leather AN-6540 with oxy snaps added and A-14 oxy snap tape added. I had never seen one with the oxy snap tape added. Leather AN6540s don't come very often with the added oxy snaps (I only have one other example). I had never seen one with the added oxy tape. I love how the helmet looks. The oxy tape is not stitched, it is held in place by the upper and lower oxy snaps.

Latest setup: TH37 headset with rubber cord and black TC66 earcups displayed with MK IV goggles (also just acquired) and pre war usn flight cap which was modified for use with headset (holes were cut out at the ear level for better sound).

Late war? I dont think black TC-66 are late war especially with TH-37. Mid war - yes. Kind of MKII or MKI would be better for sure.

Cheers,

Jerry

Hi,

while looking for information about the pre-WW2 T-20 throat microphone I became very interested in WW2 test pilots.

I read about the test pilots at Curtiss-Wright in particular the Chief Test Pilot H. Lloyd Child.

Child was a Naval Aviator who worked at Curtiss-Wright for many years during the development and production of the P-36 and P-40 aircraft.

In photos of H. L. Child he can be seen wearing a USN 1092 helmet with TH-37 receivers, civilian 'AO' Transport goggles and a pre- war USAAC T-20B throat microphone.

After seeing some helmet sets posted here set up to emulate USN helmet setups in WW2 photos I thought I'd have one of my helmets set up as H. Lloyd Child was wearing...... so in tribute to the WW2 test pilots who risked their lives every day flying testing prototypes and production aircraft for their first flights here is my small contribution to this thread....

I hope you like it, Cheers, John

Another photo of the same group of test pilots..... Interesting to see the mix of Navy, Army and civilian helmets, goggles and flight gear.......

Curtiss-Wright test pilots, winter 1941, from left to right: Robert Fausel, William Webster, H. Lloyd Child (writing on a clipboard), Herb Fisher (on wing), Ed Elliott, and Barton T. 'Red' Hulse. At the time this photo was taken, Child was the chief test pilot.

Latest setup. This is only my second setup with the Aviometer Type 9042 mike which is the early Navy boom mike version which dates back from WWII. All the items of this setup come from the same pilot.

Jerry, this one is for you. I removed the MIV goggles and swapped them for an unused pair of MKI. THe set was never used and retains 100% of its black paint on the frame
