Saw a program about her on the Mil channel today, truly an amazing behemoth.

700 some odd foot long amphibious ship, has 4 helicopters, something like 50 HumVees, some tanks, trucks, and personnel carriers. Also very interesting to see how they're made. Lots of Marines on them to go with vehicles  . Does anyone have info on their recent service, I.E. operations they have been critical to? Looking at the car holds, it almost reminds you of some of the larger car ferries, for say, the English Channel, etc.

Looking at the article, seems she has had her fair dose of troubles, though.. collision with a submarine - oil leak, 15 injuries to sub crew, failing a inspection with 2500 problems, interesting.

Actually, an INSURV inspection comming out of the ship yard with that many discrepincies is not that un common. Most were things like not having the proper markings on battle lanterns (have to be stenciled on, takes time to get to them all, Compartment close out lists not up to date (these aer lists of all valves and switches in each and every compartment, each missing or incorrect item is a hit.), While in the yards, these fittings are being installed or moved, again, it takes awhile to get it all caught up. These are things that are not done by the ship yard, but must be done by the crew, and can't be done until after leaving the ship yard. It is a hard job to get all that stuff up to speed in that short ammount of time.

My Father-in-law served on the Heavy Cruiser New Orleans (CA32) during WWII.

Archie is a Pearl Harbor survivor and likes to say that he was in combat in World War II from the first day of the war until the last. This ship has a fascinating history and fought in every famous naval engagement in the PTO. It was also one of the most highly decorated ships of WWII.
