Fort Miles

Folks, I am a member of the board of directors of the Fort Miles Historic Association. See:

www.fortmilesha.org

www.fortmiles.org

We're in the process of restoring Battery 519, in part to its original condition (we have a gun mounted in Gun Block #1!), as well as making the rest of it into a museum.

We're currently doing a great deal of on site research as to what all was there, and we believe we have the WWII aspect fairly well covered, but of course, are always open to any and all new information!

The piece we're also interpreting is the post WWII usage of this fort, and that's where we have far less information. SOSUS was there, MIUW 204 was there, Nike Missile Master was there, and many other uses which we simply don't have a lot of information!

So, this is an introduction, any and all are encouraged to contribute, join in, and give a hand! I'll be asking a lot of questions about what we have found, so, hopefully, we'll get some answers as to what the devil this and that are!!

Thanks.

John

Welcome aboard! I know I will be visiting quite often down there in the future as I will be doing my thesis on fortifications in Delaware. Looking forward to meeting you at some point! I'm thrilled that there are people like you out there looking out for the future of our forts. Now if I could scrape enough money together to buy Fort Salisbury!

Excellent! We're working there nearly every week, so, drop me a line, and I'll let you know when. Also, there are public tours on a regular basis. And don't forget to check out our artillery park!

Updated info on Ft Miles...it has been a few years since this post...Battery 519, the bunker was in derelict, relic status when the restoration began, it was filled with water, a lot condensation issues, rusting pipes, concrete failure, etc etc etc..

Since then, de humidifiers were added, a full renovation has taken place...exhibits feature operating plotting boards, comm rooms, the German submarine cannon is original from a German sub...

So if you ever get to the Delaware shore, be shore ( : ) ) to stop in

Jumpin Jack

My unit, Company D, 163rd MP Battalion, was assigned to Fort Miles for the summer of 1958 for patrol duty of the beach area. Hope this might be of some help. Jack Angolia

One thing I would like to see restored at Battery 519 are the shell tracks that wrapped around the gun. They were usually removed with the gun after the wars end , and the only examples of these tracks I find remaining are at Battery Kingman and Mills at Fort Hancock at Sandy Hook New Jersey
