Darkvalley Posted February 9, 2010 Author Share #53 Posted February 9, 2010 Hi Alls and thks for yours photos. This is my "BIB" MK1 lif vest. But I can not identify. VGS-23 and ANDY (nickname ?) Thks for your help Laurent
pararaftanr2 Posted February 9, 2010 Share #54 Posted February 9, 2010 Hello Laurent, Thank you for the great thread. To answer your question, VGS-23 was a Navy Escort Carrier Scouting Squadron. This was a short lived squadron designation that changed in March of 1943 from VGS to VC for Composite Squadron. The original VGS numbers coincided with the number of the escort carrier they were to be assigned to. In this case, CVE-23, U.S.S. Breton. VGS-23 was re designated VC-19. As for the nickname, "Andy" would probably have been used for an aviator who's last name was "Anderson" or first name was "Andrew". Hope this helps. pararaftanr2 Posted February 22, 2010 Share #59 Posted February 22, 2010 Hi Jerry, That's a very nice and well thought out display. Thanks for sharing. The late war equipment seems to be under-appreciated in general. I'm always impressed by the effort the Navy made to improve their flight gear and survival equipment during the relatively short wartime period. Your rigger modified pistol belt is great. That's something I'm still hunting for. I wonder if anyone would have an interest in a Navy "rigger made / modified" thread? Regards, Paul
jerry_k Posted February 24, 2010 Share #60 Posted February 24, 2010 Hi Pararaft ! Thanks for words!!! Yes, it is very impressive how they change all kind of survival equipment to small items which can be carried in flying suit pockets... If You have extra survival stuff which I didnt put here..Would be great if You add something more... I also like my pistol belt... I won it year or more on Ebay... hmmm about extra rigger made-modified thread... I think no one would interest except 2 or 3 person on this from so we can put some nice pictures and items here... again thanks for words and I will put some new display soon !!!! I was thinking about this imperssion after had seen great photos of Marine Bombing Sqadrons from 1944 and 1945... back Orginal photos from squadrons... note a lot of E17 survival kit, USMC canteen, some of AN6550 suit... more last one... any coments are welcome!!! pararaftanr2 Posted March 10, 2010 Share #64 Posted March 10, 2010 Hi Jerry, Thanks for another authentic reconstruction. I appreciate your attention to detail. You look like you just stepped out of one of the crews: Those USMC PBJ-1H squadrons are often overlooked, but their Mitchells with the radar directed 75 mm cannons were an awesome weapon. Can you tell us about the white label, or marking on the top flap of your E-17 kit? Thanks again! Regards, Paul
jerry_k Posted March 11, 2010 Share #65 Posted March 11, 2010 Thanks for words about my imperssion and another cool photo....Nice that only one person appreciate it I like so much these crews... The white point on top of E17 is only paintwork in square:((( Im having idea for new impression but, will take a lot of time to make it:))) Maybe You will make another one
jerry_k Posted March 11, 2010 Share #66 Posted March 11, 2010 Another shot of VMB-613... Im curiosity why on most of crew pics only two guys were wearing green nylon flight suit... They are pilots??? last one: lieutenant:RICHARD DOSSELO from VMB-611... noticed that he is wearing M668 flight suit ( round collar and two chest pockes and pencil pocket on left arm) enjoy, Jerry K. pararaftanr2 Posted March 11, 2010 Share #67 Posted March 11, 2010 Hi Jerry, That's an interesting observation about the green nylon suits. Since it was a newer item of flight clothing at the time, perhaps it was issued to officers (pilots) first? Regards, Paul
Bebel Posted March 12, 2010 Share #68 Posted March 12, 2010 Nice Jerry! Thanks for these very good photos and your representations! I love particulary your Nylon suit with plate name and rigger pocket for the knife. Impressive! The 1945/46 USN pilot seems to be less collected than the 1943/44 period I think. It's really seems to be an authentic pilot from these years! Very rare seeing Nylon flight suits in ww2 (on your ww2 pics). Lightning Ace Posted May 2, 2010 Share #75 Posted May 2, 2010 Jerry I'm still dumbfounded as to where you found all of the rarer WW II Naval Aviation items because I haunted military, gun and antique shows and put out want Ads and interviewed USN aviation vets for over 17 years and never saw the really rarer items that you have in your collection. Thanks for sharing the pictures with all of us collectors. Mike
