I am looking for any good books on The Battle of Okinawa and was wondering what you guys would recommend? My Grandfather was one of the CO's for the Aviation Construction battalion that built the air base and run way on the island and I would appreciate any books that are related to the 397th Engineering Battalion with the 10th Army. Any help or book recommendations are recommended!

I am just looking for some good books to read about Okinawa. If it also includes the Aviation Engineering Battalion great and if not no worries. Any body have a suggestion for reading?

Sorry to jump on the bandwagon, but Sledge is the finest first-person narrative I've EVER read about the war in the Pacific, much less Okinawa. Some other notable works:

The Battle of Okinawa by George Feifer

Okinawa 1945 by Dr. T.M. Huber

Killing Ground on Okinawa by James H. Hallas

Okinawa:The Last Battle of WWII by Robert Leckie

The Ultimate Battle by Bill Sloan

All are worth reading, especially for a well-rounded view from many sources.

Happy Reading!

Agree with what has already been posted and would add a couple of others:

- Typhoon of Steel - By James and William Belote

- Tennozan: The Battle of Okinawa by George Feifer

- Operation Iceberg: The Invasion and Conquest of Okinawa in World War II by Gerald Astor

All are good overall general studies. I thought Tennozan was an excellent read that really helped frame how the experiences of Okinawa contributed to the decision to drop the atomic bombs. My thoughts only ....

There's also "Okinawa: The Last Battle" by Roy Appleman. I haven't actually read it (I keep putting off buying it) but if it's anything like his other books I've read (which are about Korea) I would recommend it sight unseen.
